{"id":67822,"date":"2023-07-09T15:17:41","date_gmt":"2023-07-09T15:17:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/07\/09\/us-drone-strike-kills-islamic-state-group-leader-in-syria\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:11:39","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:11:39","slug":"us-drone-strike-kills-islamic-state-group-leader-in-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/07\/09\/us-drone-strike-kills-islamic-state-group-leader-in-syria\/","title":{"rendered":"US drone strike kills Islamic State group leader in Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A U.S. drone strike killed an Islamic State group leader in Syria hours after the same MQ-9 Reaper drones <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/syria-russia-us-drones-827cd57a36ef5b775d30e77f6b07ec1e\" target=\"_blank\">were harassed by Russian military jets<\/a> over the western part of the country, according to the Defense Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three Reapers had been flying overhead searching for the militant on Friday, a U.S. defense official said, when they were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/07\/09\/russian-fighter-jets-harass-american-drones-over-syria-again\/\" target=\"_blank\">harassed for about two hours by Russian aircraft<\/a>. Shortly after that, the drones struck and killed Usamah al-Muhajir, who was riding a motorcycle in the Aleppo region, said the official, who was not authorized to publicly discuss the matter and spoke on condition of anonymity to describe details of the military operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The official said al-Muhajir was in northwest Syria at the time of the strike, but that he usually operated in the east.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was not immediately clear how the U.S. military confirmed that the person killed was al-Muhajir; no other details were provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement Sunday, U.S. Central Command said there are no indications any civilians were killed in the strike. The military was assessing reports a civilian may have been injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friday was the third day in a row that U.S. officials complained that Russian fighter jets in the region had conducted unsafe and harassing flights around American drones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lt. Gen. Alex Grynkewich, head of U.S. Air Forces Central Command, said in a statement that during the Friday encounter, the Russian planes \u201cflew 18 unprofessional close passes that caused the MQ-9s to react to avoid unsafe situations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first friction occurred Wednesday morning when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/07\/06\/us-releases-video-of-russian-fighter-jets-harassing-american-drones\/\" target=\"_blank\">Russian military aircraft \u201cengaged in unsafe and unprofessional behavior\u201d<\/a> as three American MQ-9 drones were conducting a mission against IS, the U.S. military said. On Thursday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/07\/07\/russian-jets-harass-us-drones-over-syria-for-second-time-in-24-hours\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. military said Russian fighter aircraft flew \u201cincredibly unsafe and unprofessionally\u201d<\/a> against both French and U.S. aircraft over Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Col. Michael Andrews, Air Forces Central Command spokesman, said the Thursday incident lasted almost an hour and included close fly-bys, by one SU-34 and one SU-35 and that they deployed flares directly into the MQ-9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. officials said the drones were unarmed in the earlier flights, but were carrying weapons on Friday, as they were hunting al-Muhajir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have made it clear that we remain committed to the defeat of ISIS throughout the region,\u201d said Gen. Erik Kurilla, commander of U.S. Central Command, in the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rear Adm.
