{"id":67971,"date":"2023-07-25T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-25T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/07\/25\/va-to-research-link-between-burn-pit-smoke-and-additional-cancers\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:54:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:54:25","slug":"va-to-research-link-between-burn-pit-smoke-and-additional-cancers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/veterans\/2023\/07\/25\/va-to-research-link-between-burn-pit-smoke-and-additional-cancers\/","title":{"rendered":"VA to review link between military toxin and additional cancers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/resources\/the-pact-act-and-your-va-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\">Veterans Affairs officials<\/a> will review whether <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/06\/30\/va-plans-new-cancer-research-center-with-stanford-medical-experts\/\" target=\"_blank\">three more types of cancer<\/a> should be added to the list of conditions presumed to be caused by exposure to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/burn-pits\/2022\/03\/29\/what-are-military-burn-pits-and-why-are-veterans-worried-about-them\/\" target=\"_blank\">toxic smoke from military burn pits<\/a> and poor air quality throughout combat zones in the recent wars, potentially paving the way for thousands more veterans to receive expedited disability benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Tuesday, department leaders announced they are conducting new scientific studies to determine whether acute leukemias, chronic leukemias, and multiple myeloma outside of the head and neck in veterans are likely connected to military service in Iraq, Afghanistan and much of Southwest Asia. Troops there breathed in a combination of dust, pollution and smoke from giant military waste fires, all of which may have led to the formation of the diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move is part of the administration\u2019s ongoing focus on toxic exposure issues, which ramped up one year ago following the passage of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/01\/26\/enrollments-in-va-medical-care-spiked-after-pact-act-passage-last-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act (better known as the PACT Act)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That legislation mandated presumptive benefit status for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/12\/12\/va-starting-work-on-terminally-ill-vets-pact-act-claims-immediately\/\" target=\"_blank\">12 types of cancer and 12 other respiratory illnesses<\/a> linked to burn pit exposure in the Gulf War, the War in Afghanistan and the War in Iraq, as well as the same status for conditions like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2021\/05\/14\/benefits-for-burn-pit-illnesses-hypertension-from-agent-orange-would-be-granted-under-new-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\">hypertension among Vietnam veterans<\/a> and radiation-related illnesses for veterans who served in the 1960s and early 1970s.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/03\/29\/what-are-military-burn-pits-and-why-are-veterans-worried-about-them\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/burn-pit-balad-air-base-dvids-march-2008-file-dvids.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">What are military burn pits? And why are veterans worried about them?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The fires used in combat zones to dispose of waste may have caused serious illnesses in hundreds of thousands of U.S. service members.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The measure also codified new processes for considering and establishing other presumptive conditions, designed to cut down on the wait veterans face in having various ailments recognized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s significant, because presumptive status can speed up the process of receiving disability benefits by months or years. If a health condition is presumed to be linked to military service, veterans do not have to go through lengthy medical reviews and paperwork to prove they contracted the illness from their time in the ranks, eliminating long processing timelines and frustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since Aug. 10 \u2014 when the PACT Act was signed into law \u2014 VA has paid out more than $1.6 billion in related benefits to veterans and their survivors. At least 700,000 individuals have applied for benefits through the law, and thousands of those cases are still awaiting final decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, VA Secretary Denis McDonough said the new review into the additional cancers is the next logical step for his department in the effort to better recognize the lingering wounds of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe won\u2019t rest until we understand whether there\u2019s a connection between these deadly conditions and the service of our nation\u2019s heroes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2023\/06\/30\/va-plans-new-cancer-research-center-with-stanford-medical-experts\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP060615023698.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA plans new cancer research center with Stanford medical experts<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The new facility would also serve as a major care and training hub for veterans and non-veterans.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three new conditions were selected because existing scientific data and reports from veterans service organizations have already pointed to a connection between the cancers and military service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cancers of the head and neck are already considered presumptive under the PACT Act, so the new review will not include them.
