{"id":68020,"date":"2022-11-04T16:57:03","date_gmt":"2022-11-04T16:57:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/11\/04\/analysts-predict-more-vets-in-congress-next-year-after-midterm-wins\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:50:54","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:50:54","slug":"analysts-predict-more-vets-in-congress-next-year-after-midterm-wins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/veterans\/2022\/11\/04\/analysts-predict-more-vets-in-congress-next-year-after-midterm-wins\/","title":{"rendered":"Analysts predict more vets in Congress next year after midterm wins"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials from the non-partisan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/election-2022\/2022\/10\/17\/a-full-list-of-the-195-veterans-running-for-congress-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">Veterans Campaign<\/a> are predicting the number of veterans serving in Congress will increase following the results of the upcoming congressional midterm elections, based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/election-2022\/2022\/10\/17\/more-vets-are-running-for-congress-now-than-any-election-since-2012\/\" target=\"_blank\">number of candidates running<\/a> in winnable races.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is the first significant increase in congressional military service in half a century,\u201d said Seth Lynn, a University of San Francisco adjunct professor and founder of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.veteranscampaign.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Veterans Campaign<\/a>, which studies the participation and impact of veterans in public office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the total is still likely to be fewer than 100 veterans in the House and Senate. In 1995, at the start of the 104th Congress, veterans held 213 seats. In 1973, the total was 401 \u2014 75% of all the seats in both chambers.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/election-2022\/2022\/10\/17\/a-full-list-of-the-195-veterans-running-for-congress-this-year\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22269559998479.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">A full list of the 196 veterans running for Congress this year<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The field includes 130 non-incumbent candidates and 17 women veterans on the ballot this year.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, even a small increase in veterans in Congress is significant given the slow decline in the number of individuals with military service in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the all-volunteer force was instituted in 1973, the number of Americans to serve in the armed forces has decreased steadily. In 1980, about one in every eight American citizens had served in the military, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. By 2020, that figure was closer to one in every 17 American citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are about 18 million veterans living in America today. Nearly 200 veterans won major-party primaries this year and will vie for a seat in Congress in the midterm elections, making it the largest field of candidates with military experience in a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Wisconsin military ballots in question over fraud\" allowtransparency=\"true\" height=\"150\" width=\"100%\" style=\"border: none; min-width: min(100%, 430px);\" scrolling=\"no\" data-name=\"pb-iframe-player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podbean.com\/player-v2\/?i=3phwz-130a419-pb&#038;from=pb6admin&#038;share=1&#038;download=1&#038;rtl=0&#038;fonts=Georgia&#038;skin=1&#038;font-color=auto&#038;logo_link=episode_page&#038;btn-skin=3267a3\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve tracked veteran candidates in every congressional election since 2000 and we\u2019ve never seen this many veteran challengers secure a major party nomination,\u201d Lynn said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking at specific races, Veterans Campaign officials believe that 73 veterans are running in House districts they should win. Six more races that are toss-ups feature two veterans squaring off against each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twelve veterans serving in the Senate are not up for election this cycle. And two more incumbent Senate veterans (Illinois Democrat Tammy Duckworth and Connecticut Democrat Richard Blumenthal) are heavily favored in their reelection bids.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/election-2022\/2022\/10\/18\/half-of-gop-vets-running-for-congress-have-challenged-bidens-2020-win\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21347489704524.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Half of GOP vets running for Congress have challenged Biden\u2019s 2020 win<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Veterans are slightly less likely than other GOP candidates to embrace the election conspiracies, but many still hold those views.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s a baseline of 90 veterans in the House and Senate at the start of the 118th Congress, one fewer than the total at the start of the 117th Congress two years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lynn said he expects between three and eight additional House races will feature veteran winners.
