Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-moscow-drone-attack-41bd8dd4d4ddc0c56baf39f45728ade3\" target=\"_blank\">said the previous day<\/a>&nbsp;that \u201cthe intensity of combat and enemy shelling is high\u201d in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city of Kupiansk and the territories around it were under Russian occupation until September 2022, when Ukrainian forces conducted a rapid offensive operation that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-kyiv-world-news-kharkiv-e06b2aa723e826ed4105b5f32827f577\" target=\"_blank\">dislodged the Kremlin\u2019s forces<\/a>&nbsp;from nearly the entire Kharkiv region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The retaking of those areas strengthened Ukraine\u2019s arguments that its troops could deliver more stinging defeats to Russia with additional armament deliveries, which its Western allies&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pentagon\/2023\/07\/25\/air-defense-ammo-strykers-among-latest-weapons-shipment-to-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\">duly provided<\/a>. (Libkos\/AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maliar said Russia \u201chas formed an offensive group and is attempting to move forward\u201d in the area in an effort to advance on the Ukrainian-held city of Kupiansk, an important rail junction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia has concentrated assault troops supported by tank units, aviation and artillery in the Kupiansk area, Ukraine National Guard spokesman Ruslan Muzychuk said on national television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Russians have formed eight so-called \u201cStorm-Z\u201d detachments &#8211; made up of convicts released from prison acting under military commanders &#8211; for the push, and fighting in the area was \u201cintense,\u201d according to Oleksandr Syrskyi, the ground forces commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome positions are passed from hand to hand constantly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was not possible to independently verify either side\u2019s battlefield claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ukrainian authorities have periodically&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ukraine-russia-war-children-evacuation-08bf5ea231c9078bc3100ddfdf7d7142\" target=\"_blank\">ordered evacuations, especially of children,<\/a>&nbsp;from areas where the fighting has heated up. Officials have previously said the evacuations are necessary to save lives and enable the Ukrainian army to better defend towns from the Russian advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Millions of Ukrainian refugees left the country after Russia\u2019s invasion started in February 2022, and millions more left their homes but stayed in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier Thursday, Russian air defense systems shot down two drones heading toward Moscow for a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-moscow-drone-attack-41bd8dd4d4ddc0c56baf39f45728ade3\" target=\"_blank\">second straight day<\/a>, officials said. The reported attack disrupted flights at two international airports as Ukraine appeared to step up its assault on Russian soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One drone was downed in the Kaluga region southwest of Moscow and another near a major Moscow ring road, according to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin and the Russian Defense Ministry, which blamed the attack on Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No casualties or damage were immediately reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Domodedovo airport, south of the city, halted flights for more than two hours and Vnukovo airport, southwest of the city, stopped flights for more than two and a half hours, according to Russian news agencies. Ten flights were diverted, Russia\u2019s Federal Agency for Air Transport said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Firing drones at Moscow after more than 17 months of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/russia-ukraine\">war<\/a>&nbsp;has little apparent military value for Ukraine, but the strategy has served to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/ukraine\/2023\/08\/06\/russia-mounts-a-massive-missile-and-drone-attack-against-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\">unsettle Russians<\/a>&nbsp;and bring home to them the conflict\u2019s consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kyiv officials, as usual, neither confirmed nor denied Ukraine\u2019s possible involvement in the drone strikes, though Air Force spokesman Yurii Ihnat remarked: \u201cThis cannot but please us because people in Moscow thought they were safe. Now, the war affects each and every Russian.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe now see that \u2018something\u2019 happens in Moscow on a regular basis,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia\u2019s Defense Ministry also said it had stopped Ukrainian drone attacks in&nbsp;Moscow-annexed Crimea. It said it shot down two drones near the port city of Sevastopol and electronically jammed nine that crashed into the Black Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon is to provide Ukraine with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/ukraine\/2023\/08\/10\/us-to-send-200-million-in-military-aid-to-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\">another $200 million<\/a>&nbsp;in weapons and ammunition to help sustain the counteroffensive, according to U.S. officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ukraine has already received more than $43 billion from the U.S. since Russia invaded last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ukraine\u2019s presidential office said at least six civilians were killed and 27 were injured between Wednesday and Thursday mornings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In eastern Ukraine\u2019s Donetsk province, Russia shelled 16 cities and villages, and three people were killed, the office reported. In Zaporizhzhia, three people were killed and nine wounded, including an 11-month-old baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, 12 people remained missing after an explosion Wednesday&nbsp;at a factory&nbsp;that makes optical equipment for Russian security forces, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported, citing emergency officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia\u2019s Emergency Ministry said 71 people required medical assistance after the explosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russian officials did not offer a suspected cause of the explosion at the Zagorsk plant in the region around Moscow, which added to jitters about potential Ukrainian drone strikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fallout from Russia\u2019s war against Ukraine has brought concerns to neighboring countries, including the presence of Russia-linked Wagner group mercenaries in Belarus this summer after their short-lived&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-revolt-putin-prigozhin-zelenskyy-lukashenko-biden-4ffe3c4d1f4f10cc8496d4a8bdf4103f\">mutiny<\/a>&nbsp;in Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poland\u2019s defense minister&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/poland-belarus-border-troops-e4eaf9ad104063453295b22bf05ab31b\">said Thursday<\/a>&nbsp;that the country intends to put 10,000 soldiers along its border with Belarus amid fears of a spike in illegal immigration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polish officials have accused Belarusian authorities of organizing illegal border crossings to disrupt and pressure Warsaw, which along with other NATO countries has provided support for Kyiv\u2019s war effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
