Prove us wrong."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the Army formally unveiled its new tank on June 8, the service\u2019s acquisition officials didn\u2019t mince words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The M10 Booker, formerly known as Mobile Protected Firepower, is not a light tank, they argued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doug Bush, the Army\u2019s acquisition chief, said the Booker is a \u201ccombat vehicle,\u201d and declined to wade into \u201cesoteric and borderline religious debate among the armored community about what [the word tank] means\u201d when asked why the vehicle isn\u2019t a tank. Never mind that he accidentally called it a tank in his opening remarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maj. Gen. Glenn Dean, who oversees ground vehicle development, took a stab at it during the same roundtable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the [U.S.] Army, the historical use of light tanks has been to perform reconnaissance functions. This is not a reconnaissance vehicle,\u201d Dean said. \u201cIt\u2019s not actually a mission match [for a light tank].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet other stakeholders disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service\u2019s top officer, Gen. James McConville, sounded his opinion on the Booker during a June 13 press conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo me, it\u2019s a light tank,\u201d McConville said, reaffirming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/251155\/2021_eisenhower_presentation\" target=\"_blank\">his Oct. 2021 remarks<\/a> at the Association of the U.S. Army conference declaring the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Others have been more conflicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2017, the Booker\u2019s former program manager, David Dopp, said \u201cI don\u2019t want to say it\u2019s a light tank, but it\u2019s kind of like a light tank.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even Army Secretary Christine Wormuth acknowledged that \u201csome call it a light tank\u201d during the June 13 press conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order to determine once and forever more whether the Booker is a tank, we at the Military Times Observation Post developed a legal test* based on Supreme Court Associate Justice Potter Stewart\u2019s 1964 concurring opinion in <a href=\"https:\/\/supreme.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/us\/378\/184\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jacobellis v. Ohio<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know it when I see it,\u201d Potter famously argued. He may or may not have been describing his method of determining whether a video was \u201chardcore pornography\u201d and thus in violation of Ohio\u2019s obscenity law, but it\u2019s a convenient way to make up an official-sounding intellectual framework that just happens to support our (correct and esteemed) opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So let\u2019s evaluate the Booker according to the Potter Tank Test: Do we know it to be a tank when we see it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=8d056426-8f39-47c3-9460-001d23654c0e\" poster=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/video-poster-8d056426-8f39-47c3-9460-001d23654c0e.png\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Army named the M10 Booker after soldiers who died in Iraq in 2003 and Tunisia in 1943.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has full tracks. So do tanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has a 105mm main gun intended for direct-fire engagements. So do tanks, and the original M1 Abrams had a similar cannon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its turret can traverse 360 degrees. So can those of tanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its controls mimic those of the M1 Abrams main battle tank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn\u2019t carry infantry into battle. Neither do tanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s protected enough to withstand attacks from enemy armored vehicles. So are tanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even Dean, a prominent Booker tank denier, confessed that it \u201clooks like, smells like [and] feels like\u201d a tank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So why does a faction within the Army tell us to reject the evidence of our eyes and ears?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A potential answer comes via a 2019 white paper \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ausa.org\/publications\/mobile-protected-firepower-opportunity\" target=\"_blank\">first published by the Association of the U.S. Army<\/a>, and recently resurfaced by <a href=\"https:\/\/taskandpurpose.com\/news\/army-light-tank-mobile-protected-firepower-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Task &amp; Purpose<\/a> \u2014 in which two officers argue that the service intentionally moved away from the \u201clight tank\u201d label.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Booker is much smaller than the Abrams main battle tank, which officials say will allow it greater maneuverability and reduced maintenance needs while also providing powerful support to the infantry brigades they\u2019ll join.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But for its advantages, the Booker isn\u2019t supposed to square off against enemy main battle tanks. The white paper\u2019s authors argued, then, that dropping the \u201clight tank\u201d moniker was meant to \u201cdissuade\u201d troops from using it like a main battle tank rather than in the infantry support role they envisioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We at the Military Times Observation Post hereby reject the Army\u2019s final, most essential command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Booker is a tank, even if it defies the modern armored imagination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before today\u2019s main battle tanks devoured their siblings and became one tank to rule them all, armies around the world had different tanks for different functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even the U.S. military maintained a medium tank capability through the M551 Sheridan until 1996 \u2014 ten Sheridans from the 82nd Airborne Division\u2019s 3rd Battalion, 73rd Armor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/152981\/armor_school_dedicates_sheridan_to_commemorate_armor_airborne_units\" target=\"_blank\">completed a combat jump<\/a> into Panama for Operation Just Cause in 1989. Imagine flinging an Abrams from a plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps modern warfare requires an un-merging of the tank\u2019s intellectual family tree. We\u2019ll leave it to the maneuver doctrine<b> <\/b>nerds to figure that one out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But for now? Stop gaslighting us.
