{"id":69012,"date":"2022-11-09T14:01:21","date_gmt":"2022-11-09T14:01:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/11\/09\/iava-ceo-to-step-down-from-leadership-role\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:15:58","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:15:58","slug":"iava-ceo-to-step-down-from-leadership-role","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/veterans\/2022\/11\/09\/iava-ceo-to-step-down-from-leadership-role\/","title":{"rendered":"IAVA CEO to step down from leadership role"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jeremy Butler, CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/iava.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America<\/a>, will step down from his role leading the organization in coming months, group officials announced on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move follows a string of successes for the group on major legislative priorities over the past year, including passage of new benefits for burn pit victims in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/burn-pits\/2022\/10\/25\/nearly-113k-claims-already-filed-for-pact-act-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\">Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act<\/a> (better known as the PACT Act).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis feels like the perfect right time both for me personally and professionally for the organization for a change,\u201d he said in an interview with Military Times. \u201cI\u2019m so unbelievably proud of what the team has accomplished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe organization itself is in incredibly stable shape, and as we shift into the next phase of advocacy, following the withdrawal from Afghanistan, it\u2019s the perfect time for a fresh leader to take over with renewed energy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/burn-pits\/2022\/10\/25\/nearly-113k-claims-already-filed-for-pact-act-benefits\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22088661053972.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Nearly 113K claims already filed for PACT Act benefits<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">VA officials have urged all vets who believe they are eligible for the new benefits to apply soon.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IAVA has been a key voice in veterans issues \u2014 particularly the younger generation \u2014 since its founding in 2004. Unlike most of the legacy veterans organizations, which have leadership changes annually, Butler is only the second CEO in the organization\u2019s history, taking over from founder Paul Rieckhoff in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Butler is among the most prominent minority voices in the veterans community, and has used his leadership role in recent years to advocate for issues like expanded benefits for women veterans, LGBT veterans and other traditionally underserved groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w7-Cn1kSsxg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen title=\"Veterans group director talks events in Afghanistan\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the organization has also maintained a focus on issues related to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Butler said one of the challenges facing IAVA in coming years will be continuing to keep those topics in the American public\u2019s consciousness following the end of military overseas operations in Afghanistan last summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re more than 20 years beyond Sept. 11, and you have to continue to remind the country that veterans are still an integral part of our society, and that we have to continue to take care of them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a never ending battle to remind the country, to remind Congress, and frankly, sometimes remind the Department of Veterans Affairs as to how important it is that we continue to keep the promises that we make to our military and to our veterans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Butler will help lead the search for his replacement in coming months.
