{"id":72155,"date":"2025-03-17T15:48:26","date_gmt":"2025-03-17T15:48:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2025\/03\/17\/va-leaders-roll-back-policy-ensuring-medical-care-for-transgender-vets\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T16:48:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T16:48:06","slug":"va-leaders-roll-back-policy-ensuring-medical-care-for-transgender-vets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/veterans\/2025\/03\/17\/va-leaders-roll-back-policy-ensuring-medical-care-for-transgender-vets\/","title":{"rendered":"VA leaders announce end to all transgender-related care for vets"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Editor\u2019s Note: This story has been updated to include more information from the Department of Veterans Affairs.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans Affairs officials announced Monday they will phase out all medical treatments for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2024\/01\/25\/transgender-vets-sue-va-to-force-move-on-gender-confirmation-surgeries\/\" target=\"_blank\">gender dysphoria<\/a>, including hormone therapy and any surgical options for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/veterans\/2024\/06\/05\/lgbtq-veterans-face-more-health-problems-than-peers-study-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\">transgender veterans<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.va.gov\/press-room\/va-to-phase-out-treatment-for-gender-dysphoria\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA Secretary Doug Collins<\/a> said that \u201cVA should not be focused on helping veterans attempt to change their sex\u201d and claimed most Americans and veterans would support the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll eligible veterans \u2014 including trans-identified veterans \u2014 will always be welcome at VA and will always receive the benefits and services they\u2019ve earned under the law,\u201d Collins said. \u201cBut if veterans want to attempt to change their sex, they can do so on their own dime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move came as outside advocates condemned a decision by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/vhapublications\/publications.cfm?pub=6\" target=\"_blank\">Veterans Affairs leaders last week<\/a> to rescind a policy ensuring health care for transgender and intersex veterans, predicting \u201ccatastrophic mental and physical health consequences\u201d for patients dependent on the services.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/veterans\/2024\/06\/05\/lgbtq-veterans-face-more-health-problems-than-peers-study-finds\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/200603-F-RF516-1009.jfif_.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">LGBTQ+ veterans face more health problems than peers, study finds<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A new analysis of state data shows gay and bisexual vets face more medical care access issues than their peers.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[This] decision is a direct attack on the dignity and well-being of transgender, nonbinary, and intersex veterans, one that will have deadly outcomes,\u201d said Lindsay Church, executive director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/03\/30\/transgender-vets-call-for-more-protections-from-congress-va\/\" target=\"_blank\">Minority Veterans of America<\/a>. \u201cThis decision will force our community to defer or delay care and opt out of VA services altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis decision will exacerbate our already devastatingly high suicide rates and push more veterans into crisis for no reason other than hate. VA is abandoning those who have served, stripping us of critical health care protections, and sending a clear message that our lives and service to our country do not matter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Friday, an internal memo announced the change to VA staff. The withdrawn directive \u2014 originally approved in 2018, during President Donald Trump\u2019s first term in office \u2014 covered both medical care for transgender and intersex veterans as well as \u201cdignity in care,\u201d requiring that staff avoid using derogatory terms or misgendered language when assessing patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also required data collection on those veterans, in an effort to compile more information on the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement with the memo withdrawal, VA leaders said the move was made to conform with a presidential executive order from January requiring agencies to use \u201cclear and accurate language and policies that recognize women are biologically female, and men are biologically male.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They noted that many aspects of transgender care \u2014 including gender-affirming surgeries and cosmetic reconstruction surgeries \u2014 were not authorized under existing department regulations. Officials in President Joe Biden\u2019s administration had taken steps towards providing those services, but did not finalize those rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acting Under Secretary for Health Steven Lieberman said in the memo that the department will still adhere to \u201cits commitment to provide care to all veterans, including trans-identifying veterans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In their statement Monday, VA leaders said that the change \u201cdoes not affect VA medical care for eligible veterans who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and queer.\u201d They also promised care and treatment to veterans that are compatible with generally accepted standards of medical practice and determined by appropriate health care professionals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They did not provide specifics of what those limits mean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rachel Branaman, executive director of Modern Military Association of America called the policy rollback \u201ca direct assault on the well-being of vulnerable LGBTQ+ veterans, jeopardizing their access to essential care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCombined with the administration\u2019s planned cut of 80,000 VA employees, these actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the nation\u2019s commitment to those who have served.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democratic lawmakers said they will look for ways to stop the change. In a statement, House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee ranking member Mark Takano, D-Calif., called the move \u201cshameful and cruel\u201d and accused the department of politicizing veterans\u2019 care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Veterans Health Administration should be focused on supporting and providing quality healthcare to all our veterans, not furthering Republicans\u2019 obsessive attacks on the rights, dignity, and existence of the transgender community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA leaders said they will conduct a review of all transgender veteran care and \u201cundergo the rulemaking process to revise the medical benefits package as deemed necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collins said that any money saved from eliminating transgender health care services would be redirected \u201cto help severely injured VA beneficiaries \u2013 such as paralyzed veterans and amputees \u2013 regain their independence.\u201d Officials did not provide an estimate on how much funding would be shifted under the plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The National Center for Transgender Equality has estimated there are more than 134,000 transgender veterans in America today. VA officials said they believe fewer than 9,000 of the department\u2019s 9.1 million veterans enrolled in medical care services are
