But he worries the White House\u2019s current approach to that goal will end up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/03\/11\/gop-senators-eye-legislative-guardrails-as-va-prepares-mass-job-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\">costing veterans access to care and benefits<\/a> as it looks for savings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[This administration] wants to hold up some sort of pelt and say, \u2018Look, we cut this many jobs, we\u2019re saving you all this money,\u2019\u201d House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee Ranking Member <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/12\/10\/house-chairman-calls-for-va-secretary-to-resign-over-handling-of-sex-assault-case\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Takano<\/a>, D-Calif., said in an interview with Military Times this week. \u201cBut caring for our veterans really shouldn\u2019t be rooted in how much money we\u2019re saving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are taking care of veterans whose bodies have been mangled by war, or who are suffering from PTSD, or who need extra mental health care. This is going to take spending of money, and the taxpayer doesn\u2019t begrudge that. The [Department of Government Efficiency] mentality of only finding savings should not be what\u2019s driving policy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the last few months, Takano has been among the most prominent critics of President Donald Trump\u2019s reform efforts at the department, which include plans to cut the workforce<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2025\/03\/05\/trump-administration-plans-to-cut-80000-va-employees-memo-says\/\" target=\"_blank\"> by more than 80,000 staffers<\/a>, eliminate thousands of contract agreements and scale back services deemed extraneous by administration leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/federal-oversight\/2025\/03\/17\/va-leaders-roll-back-policy-ensuring-medical-care-for-transgender-vets\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP25060007132690.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA leaders announce end to all transgender-related care for vets<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Department leaders promised to continue to provide necessary care to transgender veterans even after the rule changes.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Takano said the department does need to find ways to improve efficiency and best use its funding, but he believes cutting workers and scaling back its budget won\u2019t ultimately improve the agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t think they\u2019re thinking about veterans first,\u201d Takano said, referencing VA Secretary Doug Collins\u2019 often-used leadership mantra to put \u201cveterans first\u201d in department decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the White House and both chambers of Congress under Republican control, the six-term congressman acknowledged there are limits to what his party can do to oppose any cuts or reforms to VA programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said his chief responsibility now is to highlight the dangers the plans could pose to department services, even as VA leaders insist that changes won\u2019t disrupt any benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRepublicans are deluding themselves if they think that the American people want to see some kind of Hunger Games fight [over funding] created between veterans and things like school lunches programs,\u201d Takano said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/03\/24\/senate-democrats-plan-shadow-hearings-on-controversial-va-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee<\/a> have scheduled \u201cshadow\u201d hearings starting next week to focus on issues they say Republican leaders are refusing to feature in regular committee schedules.
