{"id":72961,"date":"2025-06-25T19:37:33","date_gmt":"2025-06-25T19:37:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2025\/06\/25\/lawmakers-press-va-for-details-on-doge-access-to-vets-records\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T16:58:45","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T16:58:45","slug":"lawmakers-press-va-for-details-on-doge-access-to-vets-records","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/veterans\/2025\/06\/25\/lawmakers-press-va-for-details-on-doge-access-to-vets-records\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawmakers press VA for details on DOGE access to vets records"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congressional Democrats are renewing concerns that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/veterans\/2025\/02\/06\/va-leaders-working-with-doge-but-say-veterans-personal-info-is-secure\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/veterans\/2025\/02\/06\/va-leaders-working-with-doge-but-say-veterans-personal-info-is-secure\/\">Department of Government Efficiency<\/a> employees may be accessing veterans\u2019 sensitive personal information without proper authorization, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2025\/06\/24\/va-staff-finished-2m-disability-claims-faster-than-ever-this-year\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2025\/06\/24\/va-staff-finished-2m-disability-claims-faster-than-ever-this-year\/\">Veterans Affairs leaders <\/a>continue to dismiss those accusations as political theater. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2025\/03\/28\/lawmaker-warns-government-savings-could-cost-vets-critical-services\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2025\/03\/28\/lawmaker-warns-government-savings-could-cost-vets-critical-services\/\">House Veterans Affairs Committee ranking member Mark Takano<\/a>, D-Calif., sent an angry letter demanding immediate answers from VA leadership on DOGE involvement at the department\u2019s headquarters and information security throughout the agency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVA is required by [numerous laws] to protect veteran private health information,\u201d the letter stated. \u201cIt is your job to ensure veteran privacy is being maintained at VA. Your inability to answer simple questions about who is accessing veterans\u2019 private health records, and why, is an affront to the millions of veterans who use VA healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move came one day after a tense exchange during an appropriations hearing between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2025\/03\/06\/va-secretary-insists-massive-staff-cuts-needed-to-refocus-department\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2025\/03\/06\/va-secretary-insists-massive-staff-cuts-needed-to-refocus-department\/\">VA Secretary Doug Collins<\/a> and Sen. John Ossoff, D-Ga., on the topic. Both Ossoff and Takano have accused Collins of refusing to provide information on DOGE activities at VA for months. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/federal-oversight\/2025\/02\/06\/va-leaders-working-with-doge-but-say-veterans-personal-info-is-secure\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP25036806278522.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA leaders working with DOGE but say veterans\u2019 personal info is secure<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">An employee from the controversial new department will review VA contracts and IT system operations, VA officials confirmed.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Tuesday, when asked if personnel from the office have accessed patient medical records, Collins replied that \u201cthey are acting in their role as employees, and are authorized to do anything that they\u2019re currently doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pressed further, Collins accused Ossoff of playing political games and trying to smear the department and the current presidential administration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t know why there is such a lack of willingness to engage on this topic,\u201d Ossoff replied. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the departure of Elon Musk from his undefined leadership role in the Department of Government Efficiency last month, the agency continues to be a point of controversy for Congress and the executive branch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DOGE employees in recent months have accessed numerous government computer systems and databases, in some cases making revisions or changes to the networks as part of their efforts to reform federal operations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That type of activity has raised concerns among federal union representatives and outside advocates, especially when it comes to VA\u2019s databases, which contain complete medical records and financial information for millions of individuals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this year, VA leaders confirmed that DOGE employees were working inside VA but said publicly that they would be \u201cfocused on improving VA performance and efficiency and will not have access to veterans\u2019 or VA beneficiaries\u2019 data.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collins suggested that was still the case in his testimony Tuesday, although he did not explicitly say it. He sparred with several lawmakers over what he said were falsehoods and misleading statements designed to undermine reform efforts at the department, a common point of contention in the secretary\u2019s interactions with congressional Democrats. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">House Democrats this week unsuccessfully attempted to add an amendment to VA\u2019s appropriations bill for the next fiscal year which would have mandated a watchdog report on DOGE employee\u2019s access to VA information and their role in department personnel planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Takano\u2019s letter asks for information on six DOGE employees believed to have accessed VA records, along with \u201cany other individual\u201d linked to the agency. He also requested assurances that outside software or artificial intelligence tools have not been installed on VA computer platforms, allowing outside monitoring of sensitive data. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collins on Tuesday said he would take any congressional queries for the record and work on official department responses, a promise that Democrats have said he has not kept in the past and is unlikely to keep in the future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The VA secretary\u2019s appearance before the Senate Appropriations Committee was his fourth and likely last of the annual budget cycle, although Democrats on the panel suggested that they would like to hear from him directly again later this year.
