{"id":73475,"date":"2024-04-10T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-10T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/04\/10\/new-va-support-program-to-buy-up-veterans-defaulted-home-loans\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T16:19:31","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T16:19:31","slug":"new-va-support-program-to-buy-up-veterans-defaulted-home-loans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/veterans\/2024\/04\/10\/new-va-support-program-to-buy-up-veterans-defaulted-home-loans\/","title":{"rendered":"VA support program to buy up veterans\u2019 defaulted home loans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting next month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/military-honor\/salute-veterans\/2023\/11\/08\/mcdonough-wants-va-to-reach-every-veteran-in-the-country\/\" target=\"_blank\">Veterans Affairs officials<\/a> will offer a \u201clast-resort\u201d program for tens of thousands of veterans in danger of losing their homes because of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\">post-pandemic<\/a> mortgage problems, leaders announced Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new Veterans Affairs Servicing Purchase (VASP) program, which launches May 31, will allow the department to purchase<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/education-transition\/2021\/12\/08\/va-home-loans-grow-in-popularity-but-challenges-for-buyers-remain\/\" target=\"_blank\"> defaulted VA loans <\/a>from outside mortgage servicers, then modify the terms to allow financially strapped veterans to avoid losing the properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Borrowers will be guaranteed a fixed 2.5% interest rate for the remainder of their loans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis program will help ensure that when a veteran goes into default, there is an additional affordable payment option that will work in a higher-interest rate environment, so they can keep their homes,\u201d VA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/02\/17\/va-benefits-nominee-promises-more-free-help-for-veterans-filing-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\">Undersecretary for Benefits Joshua Jacobs <\/a>said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Department leaders estimate the new program will help about 40,000 veterans, troops and family members currently struggling with VA-backed home loans.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2023\/11\/20\/va-pauses-foreclosures-on-home-loans-amid-concerns-of-financial-strain\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635623554684579046-129169102jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA pauses foreclosures on home loans amid concerns of financial strain<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The department is also extending financial help programs to give more support to veterans having trouble making loan payments.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the new program will only be open to veterans who have defaulted on their mortgages and not others who renegotiated higher, costly new mortgages over the last year. Those individuals will not be able to opt into the lower-rate VASP loans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is not an incentive for default,\u201d Jacobs said. \u201cIf other home-retention options like a loan modification or repayment plan will resolve the home loan delinquency, then this program will not be an option.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the coronavirus pandemic hit the United States in spring 2020, Congress approved a forbearance program allowing some individuals who lost their normal stream of income to skip mortgage payments for months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when that program ended in October 2022, thousands of veterans found they owed large payments on their homes, forcing some into default and others into unfavorable new home loans. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/11\/11\/1211855956\/veterans-va-loans-foreclosure-covid-forbearance\" target=\"_blank\">An NPR investigation in 2023<\/a> uncovered numerous families hurt by the gaps in support services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA last fall called on all mortgage companies to delay additional foreclosures until May 2024 while they set up the new support program.
