It was not clear from VA\u2019s announcement how many of them will see changes in their status in the next few weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials insisted the move back to the office is about fairness and efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a commonsense step toward treating all VA employees equally,\u201d acting VA Secretary Todd Hunter said in a statement. \u201cMost VA clinical staff don\u2019t have the luxury of working remotely, and we believe the performance, collaboration and productivity of the department will improve if all VA employees are held to the same standard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/congress\/2025\/01\/23\/more-than-300k-va-health-jobs-exempted-from-white-house-hiring-freeze\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"252\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/25498317002_57fcb0a36c_o.jpg_06c5c3.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">More than 300k VA health jobs exempted from White House hiring freeze<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">About two-thirds of Veterans Affairs jobs will be excluded from a White House order blocking new hiring.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As one of his first official acts after inauguration, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/veterans\/2025\/01\/23\/more-than-300k-va-health-jobs-exempted-from-white-house-hiring-freeze\/\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Trump<\/a> issued a memo stating that agency heads must \u201ctake all necessary steps to terminate remote work arrangements and require employees to return to work in-person at their respective duty stations on a full-time basis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a message to VA staff on Monday, department leadership said that all political appointees, senior executive service members and their equivalents, and scientific or professional employees will no longer be eligible for remote work arrangements in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Feb. 24, any telework agreements for that group will be terminated, except for \u201cad hoc or situational telework.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials also said that by April 28, any remote work and telework arrangements for non-bargaining unit employees who live within 50 miles of an agency facility will be terminated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remote work agreements for supervisors and non-bargaining unit employees who live more than 50 miles from their official duty stations are still being reviewed. Officials promised further guidance in coming weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Union members are not covered by the new announcement. Officials said that return to in-person work for any bargaining unit employees will be announced at a later date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the new policy does allow for exceptions \u201cas a reasonable accommodation due to a disability or a qualifying medical condition.\u201d Exceptions also include military spouses with permanent change of station orders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, critics have already attacked Trump\u2019s limits on remote work as unproductive and potentially harmful to agency end strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProviding eligible employees with the opportunity to work hybrid schedules is a key tool for recruiting and retaining workers in both the public and private sectors,\u201d American Federation of Government Employees National President Everett Kelley said in a statement last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRestricting the use of hybrid work arrangements will make it harder for federal agencies to compete for top talent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his confirmation hearing last month, Veterans Affairs Secretary nominee Doug Collins told lawmakers that he would \u201cencourage employees to come back to work\u201d if confirmed into the top job, but he also said he would ensure the department was following the White House\u2019s remote work limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to make sure that we get people in there, because at the end of the day, it\u2019s about veterans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collins is expected to be confirmed
