{"id":75268,"date":"2026-03-02T18:21:05","date_gmt":"2026-03-02T18:21:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2026\/03\/02\/trump-awards-medal-of-honor-to-3-soldiers\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T17:08:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T17:08:26","slug":"trump-awards-medal-of-honor-to-3-soldiers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2026\/03\/02\/trump-awards-medal-of-honor-to-3-soldiers\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump awards Medal of Honor to 3 soldiers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Donald Trump awarded the Medal of Honor to three soldiers Monday, recognizing a service member from World War II, Vietnam and Afghanistan, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Thursday, the White House announced that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/military-history\/2026\/02\/19\/we-are-all-jews-soldier-who-defied-his-german-captors-to-be-awarded-medal-of-honor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/military-history\/2026\/02\/19\/we-are-all-jews-soldier-who-defied-his-german-captors-to-be-awarded-medal-of-honor\/\">Master Sgt. Roderick \u201cRoddie\u201d Edmonds<\/a>, retired Command Sgt. Maj. Terry Richardson and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/02\/04\/soldier-who-died-shielding-polish-ally-to-receive-medal-of-honor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/02\/04\/soldier-who-died-shielding-polish-ally-to-receive-medal-of-honor\/\">Staff Sgt. Michael Ollis<\/a> would receive the award for the nation\u2019s highest military award for valor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">White House officials previously confirmed to Military Times that Edmonds and Ollis would both posthumously be awarded the Medal of Honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Edmonds died in 1985 in his hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee, while Ollis was killed in 2013 in Afghanistan while shielding a Polish officer from a suicide bomber. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018We are all Jews\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A master sergeant serving in the 106th Infantry Division, 422 Regiment Headquarters Company, Roddie Edmonds had been serving along the Siegfried Line in Bastogne, Belgium, for a mere six days in December 1944 when the Germans began their fanatical final offensive of World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He, alongside thousands of other Americans, were captured by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge \u2014 the largest capture of GI forces during the entirety of the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually transported to German POW camp Stalag IX-A, the Americans subsisted on one loaf of bread per 10 men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was within these conditions that the POWs subsisted until roughly one month after their capture, on Jan. 27, 1945, when Roddie Edmonds, the highest-ranking American noncommissioned officer at Ziegenhain stalag that day, was told to order his nearly 200 Jewish American soldiers out of the morning roll call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, the master sergeant ordered more than 1,000 of his fellow prisoners to stand together in front of their barracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commandant scoffed, noting that they couldn\u2019t all be Jewish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roddie Edmonds was defiant, telling the Nazi: \u201cWe are all Jews.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It would not be the first time, however, that Roddie Edmonds\u2019 defiance and quick thinking would spare his men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March 1945, as the last gasps of the bloody war were drawing to a close, the Nazis of Stalag IX-A ordered the forced march of the entire camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Weakened by months of captivity, Roddie Edmonds knew the march would be a death sentence for many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the British, French and Russians began to evacuate the camp, the Americans stayed put.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the day of the evacuation, the master sergeant ordered his men break ranks and run back into the barracks. Back and forth they went. Ordered out. Running back in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After several hours of this the Nazis miraculously relented, leaving the Americans as the sole inhabitants of Stalag IX-A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Days later, on March 30, 1945, the men were liberated by the advancing 6th Armored Division. They would never meet one another ever again, yet Roddie Edmonds\u2019 acts of courage stayed with the men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His son, Pastor Christopher Edmonds, told Military Times on Sunday that his father never told a soul about what he had done . It was only after Christopher Edmonds started digging around in 2010 that the full weight of his father\u2019s deeds came to light. Together, with the aid of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jfr.org\/documentaries\/footsteps-of-my-father\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.jfr.org\/documentaries\/footsteps-of-my-father\">Jewish Foundation for the Righteous<\/a>, Christopher Edmonds has worked tirelessly to bring his father\u2019s heroism to light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once, while speaking to Lester Tanner, one of the Jewish American POWs who witnessed Roddie Edmonds\u2019 act of bravery, the soldier-turned-lawyer leaned in and said, \u201cDo you realize how many lives were saved when your father did what he did? It\u2019s not just us Jewish guys lives that were saved. Everybody was saved. I think I\u2019ve kind of calculated more than 20,000 people are alive well today because of what your father did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Surrounded in Loc Ninh<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a reconnaissance mission near Loc Ninh on Sept. 14, 1968, Richardson waged a one-man attack against enemy forces on Hill 222, saving the lives of 85 soldiers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Assigned to the 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, Richardson was serving as the platoon leader when he and his men came under heavy fire from a \u201cwell-entrenched North Vietnamese Army battalion,\u201d according to the White House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Completely surrounded, Richardson realized that the only way the Americans would avoid being overrun was to call in tactical air strikes \u2014 on himself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1512\" height=\"2016\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_5103.JPEG.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-111129\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_5103.JPEG.jpg 1512w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_5103.JPEG.jpg?resize=225,300 225w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_5103.JPEG.jpg?resize=768,1024 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_5103.JPEG.jpg?resize=1152,1536 1152w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1512px) 100vw, 1512px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This photo shows Richardson after he was found by several soldiers after hours of calling in tactical airstrikes on his position during the Vietnam War. (Courtesy Dave Himmer)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a shallow irrigation ditch with only rubber trees for cover, Richardson realized that he had unknowingly snuck into a large regimental base complex of the 7th North Vietnamese Army Division. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Undeterred, he continued to guide the pilots in for seven hours, calling in approximately 32 airstrikes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Richardson survived a series of napalm blasts \u2014 which sucks out the surrounding air \u2014 by pouring water on a towel, burying his face in it and then tucking his face under his armpit in order to not suffocate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After that, \u201cthey broke contact with us,\u201d Dave Himmer, one of the soldiers that was saved by Richardson that day, told Military Times. \u201cThere were six of us that [decided] to go up and find his body because we just knew that, how do you survive that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Himmer and five others found Richardson sitting on the hill, dried blood coming out of both eardrums \u2014 perforated from the hours of concussive blasts. One of the men snapped a photo of how they found Richardson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo me, [that] is one of the greatest pictures. That\u2019s exactly how I found him. \u2026 We did not expect to find him alive,\u201d Himmer recalled. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s just no words to me personally in the English language that describe this man\u2019s bravery,\u201d Peter Sasko, another soldier from Richardson\u2019s unit, said. \u201cThere\u2019s just 85 of us were able to survive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for Richardson himself, the ceremony \u201cbrings back things that you tried to get rid of.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s embarrassing. I mean, I had a real hard time this morning in my first interview. You just feel terrible. It\u2019s humbling. \u2026 Hopefully, I will never do anything to devalue or embarrass our country. I\u2019ll do whatever it takes and do it proudly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One soldier\u2019s sacrifice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to previous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/06\/12\/10th-mountain-soldiers-silver-star-upgraded-for-shielding-polish-soldier-from-suicide-bomber\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/06\/12\/10th-mountain-soldiers-silver-star-upgraded-for-shielding-polish-soldier-from-suicide-bomber\/\">Military Times reporting,<\/a> Ollis, assigned to the 10th Mountain Division\u2019s 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, had been posted at Forward Operating Base Ghazni in Afghanistan\u2019s Ghazni province on Aug. 28, 2013, when the base was breached by a car bomb. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The breach allowed for 10 enemy fighters wearing suicide vests to make their way inside the outer wall. More insurgents pelted the base with mortars and grenades from outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Ollis\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/valor.militarytimes.com\/recipient\/recipient-90902\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/valor.militarytimes.com\/recipient\/recipient-90902\/\">Distinguished Service Cross citation<\/a>, he accounted for his soldiers and checked for casualties before running toward the enemy assault. He linked up with Polish soldier Karol Cierpica<b> <\/b>and they moved toward the attackers and began to engage them \u201cwithout their personal protection equipment and armed only with their rifles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile fighting along the perimeter of the forward operating base, an insurgent came around a corner and immediately engaged them with small arms fire,\u201d Ollis\u2019 citation reads. \u201cWith complete disregard for his own safety, Staff Sergeant Ollis positioned himself between the insurgent and [Cierpica] who had been wounded in both legs and was unable to walk. Staff Sergeant Ollis fired on the insurgent and incapacitated him, but as he approached the insurgent, the insurgent\u2019s suicide vest detonated, mortally wounding him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His father, Robert Ollis, a Vietnam veteran himself who served with the 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division, told Military Times that he is feeling \u201cup and down\u201d regarding the ceremony.
