Cmdr. Terry Brown, who\u2019s served in the Navy for 30 years with his twin brother Lt. Cmdr. Jerry Brown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jerry Brown is eight minutes older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEither I kicked him out or he beat me out,\u201d Terry Brown said with a laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Browns enlisted in 1994 and have had the rare pleasure of serving next to one another for many stints throughout their careers. But their unique experience will soon end, with a March 1, 2025, retirement in the books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After graduating from boot camp in 1994, the brothers transferred to Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego, California, for hospital corpsman A school. They were enrolled in the \u201cbuddy program,\u201d which allowed them to continue their tandem service and transfer to their first command together at Naval Hospital Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1995.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two years later, however, their paths diverged, with Terry Brown beginning ophthalmic surgical technician C school in 1997 and Jerry Brown beginning physical therapy technician C school the following year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their paths didn\u2019t cross again until 2004 when they were both accepted into the medical enlisted commissioning program to start careers as registered nurses. During the extended time apart, the<b> <\/b>two would call each other frequently to check in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were close growing up, and their bond remained strong during their military careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2024\/08\/30\/marine-promoted-by-identical-twin-brother-while-deployed-with-15th-meu\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"183\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/8575841.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marine promoted by identical twin brother while deployed with 15th MEU<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Gunnery Sgt. Joseph Morelli was afforded the opportunity to effectively look in the mirror and promote his identical sibling, Albert, to sergeant.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They reunited in Portsmouth, Virginia, and became study buddies for their time at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia, eventually graduating in 2007 with bachelor\u2019s degrees in nursing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their time together continued a year later when they both attended Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona, and graduated with master\u2019s degrees in nursing leadership in health care systems in 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe took the same courses,\u201d Jerry Brown said. \u201cWe always bounced off notes to each other, we\u2019d sit together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When they weren\u2019t studying, Jerry<b> <\/b>Brown said, they were hanging out with one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They even rose up the ranks at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sept. 1, 2017, they promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jerry Brown currently serves as the chief of the Trauma Medicine Branch at the Defense Medical Readiness Training Institute on Fort Sam Houston, Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Terry Brown is a hospital corpsman basic program instructor at the Navy Medicine Training Support Center, which also resides on Fort Sam Houston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1599\" height=\"1066\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image014.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-113004\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image014.jpg.jpg 1599w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image014.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image014.jpg.jpg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image014.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,683 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image014.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1024 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1599px) 100vw, 1599px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Brown brothers at Naval Hospital Corpus Christi, Texas, shortly after they enlisted. (Courtesy of Jerry Brown)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even as they wound down their careers, they found themselves on the same base, near one another like so many other times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The brothers said they hope to work at the VA after they hang up their active-duty hats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But most of all, they expressed gratitude for their careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s been quite the humbling experience to see all the things that we\u2019ve seen,\u201d Jerry Brown said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The brothers, who grew up farming<b> <\/b>in Livermore, Iowa, joined the Navy because they felt like they had something to give to their country, they said. They also recognized the opportunities the Navy would afford them \u2014 to travel the world and meet people, all while doing what they loved in the world of medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They had some fun along the way, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Terry Brown was often mistaken for his brother over the years but would go along with it, pretending to be him for a few moments until revealing it was a joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jerry Brown, on the other hand, received many students who were previously taught by his brother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey always think I\u2019m ignoring them,\u201d Jerry Brown said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So he begins each class with a caveat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou may think you know me \u2014<b> <\/b>you don\u2019t,\u201d Jerry Brown said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From enlistment to retirement, Lt.
