{"id":76913,"date":"2024-12-17T20:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-17T20:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/12\/17\/tom-cruise-awarded-top-navy-honor-for-military-movie-roles\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:25:53","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:25:53","slug":"tom-cruise-awarded-top-navy-honor-for-military-movie-roles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2024\/12\/17\/tom-cruise-awarded-top-navy-honor-for-military-movie-roles\/","title":{"rendered":"Tom Cruise awarded top Navy honor for military movie roles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LONDON \u2014 The world\u2019s most famous fictional Top Gun is now a decorated naval hero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2020\/10\/21\/tom-cruise-and-jerry-bruckheimer-made-honorary-navy-aviators-ahead-of-top-gun-release\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Cruise<\/a> was awarded the U.S. Navy\u2019s top civilian honor Tuesday for \u201coutstanding contributions to the Navy and the Marine Corps\u201d with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2020\/12\/01\/7-little-known-facts-about-top-gun\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cTop Gun\u201d and other films<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cruise, who has been working in the U.K., was given the Distinguished Public Service Award by U.S. Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro in a ceremony at Longcross Studios near London.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2024\/01\/12\/a-third-top-gun-movie-is-in-the-works\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screen-Shot-2022-03-30-at-10.43.00-AM.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">A third \u2018Top Gun\u2019 movie is in the works<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Paramount recently announced it reached a deal for \u201cTop Gun 3.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 62-year-old actor said he was proud to receive the \u201cextraordinary acknowledgement,\u201d which came with a medal and a certificate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI admire all of the servicemen and women,\u201d Cruise said. \u201cI know in life, something that is very true to me, is that is to lead is to serve. And I know that to my core. And I see that in the servicemen and women.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy said Cruise had \u201cincreased public awareness and appreciation for our highly trained personnel and the sacrifices they make while in uniform.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTop Gun,\u201d the 1986 smash hit about Cold War flying aces, made Cruise a star and drove a spike in military enlistment. The Navy even set up recruitment tables in theaters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interest was renewed with the 2022 sequel \u201cTop Gun: Maverick,\u201d in which Cruise\u2019s character mentored a new generation of elite aviators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy said the sequel \u201cbrought nostalgia to older audiences and reinvigorated the minds of newer audience members, which effectively targeted a younger audience\u2019s interest into the skill sets and opportunities the Navy can provide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cruise was also commended for his roles in \u201cBorn on the Fourth of July,\u201d \u201cA Few Good Men\u201d and the \u201cMission: Impossible\u201d movies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cruise\u2019s next on-screen adventure, \u201cMission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning,\u201d is <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mission-impossible-postponed-sagaftra-strike-actors-ffbbb788219edaa196529d02e304de81\" target=\"_blank\">due for release<\/a> in May
