{"id":96193,"date":"2026-08-26T05:28:23","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T05:28:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2026\/08\/26\/marine-corps-brings-back-flu-shot-mandate-for-some-troops\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T12:33:54","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T12:33:54","slug":"marine-corps-brings-back-flu-shot-mandate-for-some-troops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2026\/08\/26\/marine-corps-brings-back-flu-shot-mandate-for-some-troops\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine Corps brings back flu shot mandate for some troops"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under this year\u2019s influenza vaccination guidelines, the Marine Corps will continue to follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2026\/06\/24\/in-shift-pentagon-grants-flu-vaccine-exceptions-to-military-services-some-federal-agencies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Defense Department policy<\/a>, which requires flu shots for some military personnel while making them optional for most others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marines.mil\/News\/Messages\/Messages-Display\/Article\/4579805\/2026-27-influenza-vaccine-guidance-for-active-and-reserve-components\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">Aug. 21 announcement<\/a> requires vaccinations for specific groups of Marines, including new recruits, healthcare workers and those deploying or serving on hazardous response teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mandates mark a notable change from last year\u2019s guidelines, which required all active-duty service members to receive a vaccination or obtain an approved exemption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, citing \u201cmedical autonomy\u201d and religious freedom, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/04\/21\/flu-vaccine-requirement-discarded-effective-immediately-hegseth-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">repealed flu vaccine mandates<\/a> for all branches of the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur men and women in uniform were forced to choose between their conscience and their country even when those decisions posed no threat to our military readiness,\u201d he said in his<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3nQ0Als06mM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\"> video announcement<\/a>, adding that mandating troops get flu vaccines \u201cweaken[s] our warfighting capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About two months later, however, a flu outbreak that sickened some 300 people and killed one at Lackland Air Force Base, where the Air Force hosts its boot camp, forced the Defense Department to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pentagon-flu-shot-requirement-boot-camp-outbreak-4255f063ef99ea2d00cb24fec8793c32\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">modify the policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Critics of Hegseth\u2019s policy have maintained that vaccination policies should be guided by scientific evidence rather than political beliefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robert H. Hopkins, a physician and medical director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, said getting an annual flu vaccine is the best way to prevent the spread of the potentially life-threatening disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor populations in close living and working environments, such as military personnel, flu can spread quickly and impact operational readiness. Maintaining high vaccination coverage is a proven strategy to reduce outbreaks and protect both individuals and communities,\u201d he said in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfid.org\/nfid-statement-on-us-military-flu-vaccine-policy-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\"> response<\/a> to Hegseth\u2019s initial decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new Marine Corps guidelines appear to acknowledge at least some of those concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the announcement, the Marine Corps calls seasonal influenza \u201ca highly contagious disease that has the potential to significantly impact force health and mission readiness.\u201d The service adds that \u201ca timely comprehensive vaccination program\u201d will be enforced \u201cto mitigate risk to force and mission.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month, the Navy also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2026\/07\/27\/navy-announces-new-flu-vaccination-requirements-for-sailors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">updated its policy to mandate<\/a> that select groups obtain a flu vaccine. Those groups include recruits, personnel involved with or attending training programs, medical personnel, hazardous response teams, and those on deployment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps wants its active-duty component to be in compliance by Dec. 15.
