U.S. Navy destroyer Fitzgerald will be towed to drydock in Yokosuka, Japan after its June 17 collision with the freighter ACX Crystal.
The collision tore a 12 by 17-foot hole in the Fitzgerald’s hull below the waterline.
It also damaged the ships superstructure and radar array.
7 sailors died in the collision.
The Navy must now figure out how to repair the Fitzgerald.
With a compromised hull, it will be difficult set the ship in drydock.
Inspections will soon determine whether the ship can be repaired or if the Fitzgerald must be scrapped.
