According to the Associated Press, in 2016, the report of sexual assaults within the U.S. military continued to grow, this according to officials at the U.S. Department of Defense. Additionally, nearly 60 percent of the victims of these assaults also reported some type of retaliation against them after filing their complaints. The survey was conducted anonymously and defense officials say that despite the numbers the survey still shows some progress, based on fewer than 15,000 service members having reported being victimized from unwanted sexual contact. The revelations of the survey were shared the condition of anonymity, because no authorization had been given to discuss the report findings publicly ahead of time.
