The nation’s top intelligence official stated the security situation in Afghanistan will worsen without an increase in military support. According to Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, the political and security situation in the war-torn country will continue to deteriorate throughout 2018 unless the US and their allies contribute more to the fight against the Taliban. According to to U.S. military estimates from earlier in the year, Afghan army units are pulling away from, or abandoning rural bases. More recently, the Afghan government has only claimed control or influence over 57-percent of the countryside.
