World War II veteran John Kuhn lost his two Bronze Star medals and several ribbons from his service in the Navy after some thieves broke into his home while he was in the hospital for a few months, according to WHNT 19 News.
“Somebody broke into the house and they took a lot of stuff,” Kuhn, of Decatur, Alabama, told the station.
To make matters worse, he found his roof had fallen into disrepair, forcing him to rent a house. The American flag hanging on his roof was also tattered.
Chris Batte, founder of the Huntsville chapter of Forever Young Senior Veterans, told WHNT 19 News that she plans to notify the government so Kuhn can be issued replacement ribbons. She has organized also for Wilson Lumber Company to donate all the supplies needed to roof the house and is currently looking for experienced volunteers to roof the house.
Kuhn returned home to find a tattered flag left outside his house. It has since been taken down and properly disposed of.
Forever Young Senior Veterans is a program that helps give “honor, healing, and hope to military veterans 65 years and older by granting their unfulfilled dreams,” according to their
mission statement. The program began 11 years ago in Collierville, Tennessee, and has now expanded to Alabama.
