I got a call from John Hwang, the owner of Rainier Arms, asking if we wanted a sneak preview of the upcoming Mega Machine Shop new “Monolithic Tactical System,” referred to as the MTS-300. John has been good in the past for intel and upcoming items, and this time was no exception.

The Monolithic Tactical System is a true one-piece upper receiver for the AR15/ M16 family of upper receivers. Machined from 7075 aircraft-grade aluminum, and hard coat anodized to a deep black mil-spec type III, this is a good looking upper receiver. I asked John if these were teflon coated to give the deep black finish, and he said they were not, but it is a common misconception with MMS products. According to Mega Machine Shop (MMS), they use the most expensive ink/dye when anodizing, and they ensure their parts are left in the anodizing bath for a specific time, which is what gives it a deep black, and extra-hard finish. Speaking from experience, I’ve abrasive blasted a MMS AR15 lower in the past, and was surprised at how much harder their anodizing was than that of many other companies. Have you ever seen a purple piece of anodized aluminum? That’s what happens when good anodizing goes bad, and its never happened to any of the MMS products I’ve seen or heard of.
The MTS-300 that we picked up is considered a midlength, but John said that he had been told by Brian Damis, the firearm sales manager for Mega Machine Shop, that they would be producing carbine length and rifle length as well. He added that they were also kicking around the idea of building a 10-inch version. I asked Brian what the reason was that they were jumping into the “Monolithic” upper market. He said that it was a natural progression of their existing firearm line.
I took a tour of the Mega Machine Shop a few years back, and was impressed by how nice the guys were, and how attentive they were to small details. I was aware that they did a lot of work for larger companies in the weapon community, as well as in the aerospace industry. Its nice to see they carry over their aerospace experience and attention to their weapon components.
We hope to get a look at some of the new and upcoming products that Mega Machine Shop is building in the future,. They are building enough new AR parts to keep things interesting for awhile, and that is a good thing for all of us. Thanks for the info and upper John, and Brian thanks for letting us release this as a pre-SHOT announcement.
