Whenever a new handgun, or pistol caliber carbine is announced, the comments are invariably full of people demanding a 10mm Auto version.

And for good reason.

Despite only being a single millimeter larger in diameter, the little round packs vastly more kinetic energy than 9mm parabellum.

Indeed, in certain loadings, the 10mm Auto approaches lower end .44 Magnum amounts of energy. But unlike most magnum cartridges, 10mm is designed from inception for use in auto-loading firearms.

But for all its popularity among ammo aficionados and enthusiasts, there aren’t many commercial loadings available for the round.

Thankfully, long-time ammo maker, CCI just announced new brass-cased Blazer Brass FMJ 10mm ammunition. Check out the press release below.

No, that’s not a typo. The newly released SIG ammunition that starts with a, “6″ and ends with Creedmoor isn’t 6.5. It’s the lighter weight, higher velocity round.

Designed from inception for ultra long-range shots that require high ballistic coefficients, the 6mm Creedmoor round hasn’t found the same widespread acceptance of its slightly-larger big brother.

Just the same, it is gaining in popularity, so fans of the round will be thrilled that SIG is entering the fray — especially with their high-quality copper ammo. Check out the presser below.

One thing that wasn’t mentioned in the press release is how the round was designed specifically to run in AR-10 pattern rifles and carbines, making it a very solid choice for varmint-hunters and other small game hunters who like to engage targets at a distance.

Very Cool! Again, this is fantastic news for fans of the caliber, in particular the ones who wish to hunt with it. As for pricing and availability, nothing was officially mentioned yet, but shooters can visit www.sigsauer.com for the latest information.

When FN first released the SCAR — or Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle — series of rifles in response to a solicitation from SOCOM back in 2004, it turned heads in both the military and civilian shooting world.

This was especially true of the 7.62x51mm SCAR H, which managed to pair a lightweight, ultra-reliable battle rifle with incredibly light felt recoil.

The two are hardly synonymous; Most lightweight select-fire weapons in 7.62 NATO are uncomfortable to shoot in semi-automatic, and utterly uncontrollable in fully-automatic. But by utilizing a modified piston operating system, the SCAR H tamed the often brutal recoil of full-powered rifle rounds allowing SOCOM forces to field a hard-hitting battle rifle that out-ranged the military’s M4 carbine.

And while it had greater ballistic range, the accuracy of the SCAR H and SCAR 17 wasn’t up to snuff with precision 7.62 NATO platforms like Knight’s Armament’s SR-25. Which makes sense — the SCAR H is a battle rifle, not a DMR or sniper platform.

But civilian, law enforcement and military agencies still wanted the reliability of the SCAR with the accuracy of a DMR.

Read More: Now we mere mortals can own a civilian version of the precision-shooting Mk20

In response, FN released the SCAR 20s and MK 20 SSR. A longer, heavier barreled variant featuring an elongated upper receiver, PRS stock and Geisselle trigger that stretched the weapon’s effective range out to 800 meters. But there was one component of the rifle holding it back from even greater precision, one that was completely out of FN’s hands: the caliber.

But with their latest announcement, FN has now stretched the effective range of the SCAR 20s even further. Enter, the SCAR 20s in 6.5 Creedmoor.

The FN SCAR 20s in 6.5 Creedmoor is also available in black, and accepts standard SCAR 17 / SCAR H magazines.

For the uninitiated, 6.5 Creedmoor is a purpose-built, precision round designed by Hornady back in 2007. It offers a superior ballistic coefficient than 7.62×51, and its short overall length makes it suitable for use in short actions and auto-loading weapons like the SCAR.

This is incredible news for precision shooters who want an auto-loading rifle that is both soft-shooting and extraordinarily reliable. Check out the official press release below.

This new variation of the SCAR 20s seems to have everything a SCAR enthusiast could want. The only downside is the price: an MSRP of $4,499. But no one ever accused FN of making cheap products. For more information on the 6.5CM SCAR 20s, head over to https://fnamerica.com/products/fn-scar-series/fn-scar-20s-6-5cm-blk/ .

The world of AR-15s is a very crowded one. New companies looking to make a name for themselves must innovate and offer tangible advantages over, or address shortcomings of existing designs to have a chance of success.

One company in particular that has done a fantastic job achieving both of these goals, is Maxim Defense.

Specializing in personal defense weapon (PDW) style carbines and pistols, the Minnesota-based arms maker just announced the latest addition to their product lineup: the MDX.

The MDX is a magazine-fed, semi automatic (and select-fire) carbine developed in response to the Army Expeditionary Warrior Experiment. Though based on Eugene Stoner’s M16/M4 carbines, the MDX utilizes a modified buffer and receiver extension to accommodate its proprietary ultra-compact PDW stock.

The MDX also uses ultra-rigid monolithic railed forearms that incorporate M-LOK slots for increased accessory mounting points without adding extra weight. This further adds to the weapons versatility and mission-configurable adaptivity.

The result is a compact weapon that offers the maneuverability and handiness of an SMG, with greater ballistic efficacy and increase effective range normally associated with a full-sized carbine.

The MDX is available in three calibers – traditional 5.56, .300blk and 7.62x39mm. The first two feeding from STANAG magazines, and the 7.62x39mm presumably feeding from either a proprietary magazine, or the ACS 7.62x39mm magazine.

The Maxim Defense MDX is available in three different configurations, and three separate calibers.

These very unique-looking pistols, rifles and carbines are sure to make a big splash at SHOT. But what’s under the hood? Check out the presser below.

Very interesting. But the announcement doesn’t end there. Maxim also announced purpose-built ammunition to maximize effectiveness in short barreled weapons like the MDX and PDX.

Standard rifle ammunition is designed for maximum effect in full-length barrels. Since the new MDX/PDW weapons have considerably shorter lengths, Maxim Defense designed new loadings for the carbines to maximize ballistic efficacy.

Standard rifle ammunition is designed for maximum effect in full-length barrels. Since the new MDX/PDW weapons have considerably shorter lengths, Maxim Defense designed new loadings for the carbines to maximize ballistic efficacy.

This is exciting news not just for perspective buyers of the MDX or PDX, but also for anyone who owns an SBR or AR pistol in 5.56 NATO, .300blk or 7.62x39mm. The press release spells out the details below.

Caliber

Bullet Weight

Bullet Type

300BLK

115gr / 190gr subsonic

Solid Copper Spun

5.56 NATO

55gr, 62gr, 70gr

Solid Copper Spun

7.62x39mm

119gr

Solid Copper Spun

These new pistols, carbines and ammunition loadings are very interesting, and should be a hit with civilian and law enforcement alike. For more information, stay tuned to GearScout for coverage of the new weapons and ammunition that Maxim Defense will be showcasing at SHOT Show 2020, and for all the specifications visit https://www.maximdefense.com/

Militaries have a long history of relying on the civilian shooting world to spearhead innovation when it comes to calibers; 5.56mm began life as the .222 Remington, 9mm parabellum was heavily influenced by 7.65 Luger and .338 Lapua began life as an English big game hunting round.

And more times than not, once a new round is developed and adopted by a military organization, they use the same ammo makers they’ve used for decades and sometimes even centuries.

Which is what makes the latest announcement from Sig Sauer so impressive. As of January 10th, Sig was awarded a $10 million contract from the US Army to manufacture so-called MK 248 MOD 1 and MOD 0 .300 Win Mag ammunition for use with Military sniper weapons.

Check out the full press release below.

This is exciting news for Sig, and serves as a testament to the efficiency of the manufacturer as well as the quality of the ammo. One question many civilians will have, is if these will lower the price of .300 Win Mag for civilian sales. In the short run, very likely not.

But with the increased production and the potential surplus runoff from SIG, it is a definite possibility that shooters could see a slight reduction in cost of the hard-hitting magnum round in the future. One can hope, at least. Either way, head over to www.sigsauer.com for more information on the contract, and all of Sig’s products.

When Winchester Ammunition announced their straight-walled .350 Legend cartridge at SHOT Show 2019, only CMMG and Ruger had firearms chambered in the new round.

Now, roughly one year later, the potent round appears to be gaining traction with additional gun manufacturers with the latest adopter being Franklin Armory.

The cartridge was developed in response to various hunting laws in the United States that restrict calibers to straight-walled cartridges. This effectively restricted hunters to .30-30, .45-70 Gov or similar rounds in lever-action, or breech-loading rifles.

To give hunters an auto-loading alternative, Winchester developed the .350 Legend – a round that functions in a modified STANAG magazine in standard AR-15 magazine wells.

Despite being developed initially as a hunting round, it is equally as effective as defensive cartridge. There are even super-heavy subsonic loads available for shooters running a suppressor who want more ballistic energy than .300 BLK.

Franklin Armory’s newly-announced .350 Legend AR-15, the M4-HTF XTD R3 16″ RIFLE 350 LEGEND

So while the .350 Legend has plenty of great features, it wouldn’t mean anything if companies declined to manufacturing rifles chambered in it. Thankfully for fans of the round, Franklin Armory has just announced a few firearms in the caliber. Check out the official press release below:

Not only is Franklin building standard pistols and carbines in .350 Legend, but also California and New York compliant models. So shooters living in ban states can still have access to these new guns. T

he release continues on and states that versions of the .350 Legend firearms will be available at Media Day at SHOT Show 2020, so hopefully the staff here will have a chance to take them for a test spin.
From time to time, GearScout will post messages from the tactical industry that we think will be of interest to our readers.

The new 6mm 109 Grain Long Range Hybrid Target Bullets provide competitive PRS shooters and long-range accuracy enthusiasts a level of precision and consistency unmatched by all other bullet manufacturers. Utilizing advanced and proprietary manufacturing processes, Berger’s innovative Meplat Reduction Technology (MRT) System applies controlled pressure along the projectile nose, producing a homogeneous and repeatable bullet profile for the industry’s most consistent Ballistic Coefficients (BC).

The 6mm 109 Grain LRHT boasts a high BC, jump-tolerant hybrid ogive profile that is Doppler Radar verified with less than 1% BC variation. A high BC is desirable for competitive shooting, however, shot-to-shot consistency is most critical when engaging targets to 600 yards and beyond. The 109’s are tailored to cartridges such as 6mm Creedmoor, 6mm BR, Dasher, 6XC, 6BRX, and 6×47 among others. It offers the same stability factor as the industry-leading 105gr Hybrid Target and is a direct replacement for 1:8” twist barrels.

The 6mm 109’s offer several advantages,” said Bryan Litz, Berger’s Chief Ballistician. “Its ultra-sleek profile provides a higher Ballistic Coefficient (BC) resulting in less wind drift at all ranges. Using the proprietary MRT technology also results in a higher and more consistent BC which is important for reducing dispersion at long range.”

The Berger 6mm 109 Grain Long Range Hybrid Target Bullets are available at authorized Berger Retailers and at Bergerbullets.com/dealer-map. Use our Dealer Locator to find a store near you.

There are a few intermediate carbine cartridges that either compete with the 5.56mm or attempt to fill the gap between 5.56mm and something larger with more range like a .308.

The 6.5 Grendel falls into the latter category. It’s based on the .220 Russian cartridge, and it packs more punch than a 5.56mm.

But there’s already stiff competition in this area.

The 5.56 has a lot of staying power simply because AR-15 parts and 5.56 ammunition are so ubiquitous.

The .300 Blackout is a better option if you’re looking for a straight over replacement for the 5.56mm with better tactical performance.

And the 6.5 Creedmoor is the cool round in the long range game right now.

So, what does the 6.5 Grendel have to offer? And, could it be the next big thing?

Here are five reasons why Grendel could make a run for it.

Affordability

This is a big one. If there’s a demand for firearms chambered in a certain cartridge, firearms manufacturers will usually build guns to meet that demand. And it’s hard to generate demand for a round if nobody can afford it.

This is good news for the Grendel because the round has become far more affordable in the last 10 years. Now, the cheapest steel case 6.5 Grendel ammunition costs about the same per-round as cheap 5.56mm. And 6.5 Grendel is often less expensive than .308 ammunition.

Additionally, 6.5mm barrels have gotten much more affordable since the 6.5 Creedmoor became so popular —making the cost of building a 6.5 Grendel rifle comparable to the cost of building any other AR-15.

So, the 6.5 Grendel could continue to gain popularity as people look for a round that fits AR-15 pattern rifles but offers better long range performance at about the same price as 5.56mm.

Long Range Performance

The 6.5 Grendel is not the long range precision powerhouse that 6.5 Creedmoor is. However, 6.5 Grendel offers surprisingly strong performance out to about 800 meters.

The 6.5 Grendel could be pushed to 1000 yards. But, the round isn’t ideal for that sort of extreme long range shooting.

It’s a legitimate option for DMR type rifles that require better long range capabilities than a standard AR-15, without adding too much weight to the platform.

The 6.5 Grendel also works as a medium range round for bolt-action rifles. However, it’s best suited to semi-automatic rifles.

Basically, the 6.5 Grendel is built for those who want a round that has a longer useful range than the 5.56mm, but isn’t as heavy as a .308 or as specialized as a 6.5 Creedmoor.

AR-15 Compatibility

We’ve mentioned it indirectly, but the 6.5 Grendel can be fired out of an AR-15 pattern rifle. Obviously, you need the correct upper receiver parts.

And you need caliber-specific magazines (300BLK beats 6.5 Grendel in that area).

But, in the end, you can shoot 6.5 Grendel out of an AR-15 type rifle. This gives the 6.5 Grendel a lot of longevity because the AR-15 is so popular.

Also, an AR-15 chambered in 6.5 Grendel offers similar magazine capacity (26 rounds) and recoil to a standard AR-15.

So, the rifle feels and operates much like a standard AR-15, but it has better long range ballistics.

Hunting Viability

The 6.5 Grendel is a legitimate hunting round.

It may not be great in a bolt action rifle, but you could build an AR-15 for hunting around the 6.5 Grendel. It would have longer range and better terminal ballistics than a 5.56mm AR. And it would be a true modern sporting rifle.

Nobody could argue that.

It’s not 5.56mm

This might sound silly, but many people simply want a round that’s not 5.56mm.

Maybe they’re hipsters.

Maybe they’re contrarians.

Who knows. But a lot of people just like alternatives to the mainstream options. And, the 6.5 Grendel is a legitimate alternative to the 5.56mm.

But Is It the Next Big Thing?

In short, no.

The 6.5 Grendel certainly isn’t going anywhere, and it will likely continue to get more popular.

However, it’s not as good for just straight-up shooting as the 5.56mm. It’s not as tactically specialized as the 300BLK. And it’s not as capable of long range precision as the 6.5 Creedmoor.

It’s an affordable hunting round that shoots well from a semi-automatic rifle. That’s a cool niche. But, it’s not a major niche that turns a round into a core cartridge.

Also, there’s been very limited military adoption of the 6.5 Grendel. And — even though the military uses guns very differently than civilians — rounds that have widespread military deployment tend to be the most popular.

So, in the end, the 6.5 Grendel won’t be the next big thing. But, it’s still a very capable round that’s popular enough you’d have no problem finding a rifle and ammunition if you wanted to load it up for your next trip to the field.

A modular hand grenade that can be modified to increase explosive power by connecting other grenades may be next on the Corps’ list for a future grenade.

The scalable hand grenade the Corps is looking at is manufactured by Nammo — the makers of the Corps’ single-shot light anti-tank rocket launcher known as the M72 LAW.

The grenade produces little fragmentation and relies on over-pressurization to produce casualties or knock out enemy forces hiding in enclosed rooms, Pat Woellhof, the director of Marine Corps operations for Nammo, told Marine Corps Times at the 2019 Modern Day Marine expo.

It’s known as an offensive hand grenade due to the small amount of fragmentation that disburses from the grenade upon explosion. The Corps calls it the Mk 21 Mod 0, and Woellhof says the Corps doesn’t have an offensive hand grenade in its arsenal.

Instead, the Corps relies on a defense grenade known as the M67 fragmentation grenade. That grenade has fragmentation that creates an effective casualty radius of 15 meters upon explosion.

There are some drawbacks to relying strictly on a defensive grenade, Woellhof said. With a defensive hand grenade, “you can’t throw it far enough to get outside the fragmentation,” Woellhof said.

Marines who cleared dense urban terrain in bloody fights in the Iraqi cities Fallujah and Haditha are still carrying pieces frag and shrapnel in their bodies from their own grenades, Woellhof explained.

Marines clearing rooms with defensive grenades may have also inadvertently caused civilian casualties, Woellhof said.

“If you throw an M67 into a room it doesn’t discriminate.”

Nammo’s offensive grenade can limit collateral damage. The device is modular, so a Marine can increase or decrease explosive power by adding grenade bodies. The explosive power of the grenade depends on how many grenade bodies are connected together.

A base grenade will cause concussions if a Marine tosses it into a room.

“And you know, they’ll wake up with a bad hangover,” Woellhof said.

Two connected base grenades will provide 261 grains of explosives and “will kill anything in a room,” Woellhof explained. Three grenade bases will produce 391 grains of explosives and can be used to destroy structures, he said.

The Corps is “interested and pursuing” the MK21 Mod 0 grenade but nothing has been signed or approved at this time, according to Maj. Joshua Benson, a Marine spokesman.
