Franklin Cauble, who died in Elmira&#8217;s Civil War prison camp, was mistakenly buried at Woodlawn National Cemetery under the name of Pvt. Franklin Cooper, according to his great-great grandson, Tom Fagart of Concord, N.C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A story published in Tuesday&#8217;s Star-Gazette brought Fagart&#8217;s situation to the cemetery administration&#8217;s attention, according to an e-mail from spokeswoman Kristen Parker received Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve researched our internal correspondence records and cannot seem to find a request from Mr. Fagart (in) reference (to) the Confederate headstone mentioned in the article,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parker asked for Fagart&#8217;s contact information, which the Star-Gazette has provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We would like to properly research this case and make a determination regarding the headstone but need to speak to Mr. Fagart first to get more information,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We take the memorialization of our veterans seriously and do everything in our power to ensure they are treated with the dignity and respect deserving of their service.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fagart, 71, said he has documentation proving the gravestone is incorrect. He has posted online military records from the prison camp for both men: Cauble&#8217;s record indicates he died of dysentery on Oct. 28, 1864, while Cooper&#8217;s record shows he was released July 3, 1865.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cauble was about 39 years old when captured on June 3, 1864, and sent to Point Lookout, Md., he said. He was moved July 12, 1864, to the Elmira prison camp and subsequently died there. He is buried in plot No. 718 in the cemetery&#8217;s Confederate section, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cooper, who died Oct. 2, 1924, is not buried in Elmira but in Silver Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Norwood, N.C., Fagart said, adding that Cooper applied for and received a military pension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prison camp operated from July 6, 1864, until July 11, 1865, incarcerating a total of 12,121 Confederates. Insufficient food, extreme bouts of dysentery, typhoid, pneumonia, smallpox, inadequate medical care and flooding of the Chemung River resulted in the deaths of 2,963 prisoners, a mortality rate of about 25 percent. Prisoners dubbed the camp &#8220;Hellmira.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Confederate section of Woodlawn Cemetery, where prisoners who died at the prison camp were buried, became Woodlawn National Cemetery on Dec. 7, 1877.
