In the study of the VA Palo Alto Health Care System\u2019s partnership with local emergency housing providers, medical care costs for veterans experiencing homelessness dropped from about $127,000 before housing to less than $60,000 afterwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study focused on a group of only 20 elderly veterans experiencing homelessness \u2014 a group may have more chronic and expensive health issues than the general veteran population \u2014 and researchers acknowledged the findings are limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But those findings were released alongside another study which found intervention on any single factor stress factor facing veterans can help prevent individuals from experiencing homelessness. Researchers argued that advocates should deal with financial and mental health issues simultaneously to intervene quicker and more efficiently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMental illness may impact a client\u2019s spending habits and, conversely, the client\u2019s money mismanagement might lead to stress and thereby increase symptoms of severe mental illness,\u201d the study stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers said waiting to address those money issues until after all mental health issues are solved delays could critical aid for endangered individuals. \u201cHomelessness is a multifactorial problem \u2026 greater financial strain accompanying severe mental illness could contribute to risk of homelessness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/09\/21\/coronavirus-complicates-efforts-to-help-homeless-veterans\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_666894584132.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Coronavirus complicates efforts to help homeless veterans<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Federal figures on veterans homelessness are due out soon, but they won&#039;t reflect the impact of coronavirus on the problem.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together, the two studies argue for aggressive intervention to help veterans at-risk for homelessness. The findings come less than a month after Department of Housing and Urban Development officials reported a small rise in the number of homeless veterans in 2020, a statistic that drew concerns from many veterans advocates after a decade of steady declines in that figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most recent HUD figures estimate about 37,200 veterans were without stable housing at the start of 2020. Estimates for 2021 \u2014 which will include the impact of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic on the issue \u2014 are expected sometime this fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 21 of every 10,000 veterans in the United States today are without homes, according to the HUD findings. Veterans make up about 6 percent of the population of the United States but 8 percent of the country\u2019s population of those experiencing homelessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study results are available on <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/lww-medicalcare\/toc\/2021\/04001#831653681\" target=_blank>the journal\u2019s web
