{"id":102629,"date":"2021-07-27T17:14:03","date_gmt":"2021-07-27T17:14:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/07\/27\/brain-games-help-restore-function-after-mild-tbis-study-finds\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T10:47:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T10:47:26","slug":"brain-games-help-restore-function-after-mild-tbis-study-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2021\/07\/27\/brain-games-help-restore-function-after-mild-tbis-study-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"Brain games help restore function after mild TBIs, study finds"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans with a history of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/10\/29\/this-study-is-recruiting-troops-for-mild-tbi-research\/\" target=\"_blank\">mild traumatic brain injury<\/a> showed vast improvement in cognitive function after 12 weeks using an online brain game program, according to a study published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/brain\/advance-article\/doi\/10.1093\/brain\/awab202\/6328669\" target=\"_blank\">journal Brain<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study, dubbed BRAVE, had 83 veterans use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brainhq.com\/news\/brave-study-on-mtbi-concussion\/\" target=\"_blank\">BrainHQ program<\/a> for one hour a day, five days a week, and found that they had improved on average 24 percentile ranks, according to a release. In other words, from the 50th percentile of function to the 74th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe general idea is that you have a noisy brain,\u201d Dr. Morris Bell, who co-authored the study, told Military Times on Friday, of the long-term effects of some mTBI. \u201cThat the impact of a blast injury, in particular, is a diffuse disorder. You need to improve processing at the most basic level.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Defense Department-funded study compared the program against a control group, whose members played commercial computer games. The BrainHQ group saw four times the improvement of the control group, which increased to five times when members were tested again 12 weeks after ending the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TBIs, especially mild kind regularly sustained during a career of ordnance blasts and firing high-powered weapons, are a key focus for DoD, as the long-term effects can cause not only physical issues, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2019\/12\/12\/could-mild-brain-injuries-be-affecting-good-order-and-discipline-the-pentagon-wants-to-find-out\/\" target=\"_blank\">emotional and behavioral ones<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2020\/04\/29\/troops-to-receive-purple-hearts-for-injuries-during-iranian-missile-barrage-on-al-asad-airbase-in-iraq\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20013453933262.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Troops to receive Purple Hearts for injuries during Iranian missile barrage on al-Asad airbase in Iraq<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">It\u2019s unclear at the moment how many troops will receive the medals. The defense official told Military Times that the medal award packets are still going through the approval process.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BrainHQ, available online with free and subscription choices, was developed by Michael Merzenich, who created the cognitive training to help cochlear implant patients restore their ability to process sounds. He\u2019s since gone on to develop a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/topics\/learning-memory\/dyslexia-video-games\" target=\"_blank\">similar program<\/a> for children with dyslexia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program starts with basic visual and auditory processing exercises, Bell said, which create the building blocks, with choices targeted to brain speed, memory and attention. And unlike video games, he said, you can\u2019t pick up tricks to perform better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s no strategy for that,\u201d he said. \u201cYou get better because your brain gets better at it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on how well you do, the program flexes. If you\u2019re doing poorly, it will get easier, and if you\u2019re whizzing through it, it gets more difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd in this trial, participating in this also was a way of overcoming the fatigue, and staying focused, and learning to have confidence in your ability to stay focused,\u201d Bell added, another significant hurdle for long-term TBI effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"626\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/BRAIN.mind_bender.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-97733\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/BRAIN.mind_bender.jpg.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/BRAIN.mind_bender.jpg.jpg?resize=300,157 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/BRAIN.mind_bender.jpg.jpg?resize=768,401 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/BRAIN.mind_bender.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,534 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">In the Mind Bender exercise, different sets of rules are applied and then replaced, pushing the brain to quickly adapt when circumstances change.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was a key effect for John Oppenheim, 80, a former Air Force medic who fractured his skull at 7 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oppenheim, who served in the late 1950s, describes himself as somewhat hyper, with poor short-term memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was a cut-up in school. ertainly in the military I did the same thing,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen I got out, they said, \u2018Don\u2019t call us, we won\u2019t call you.\u2019 &#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He learned about BrainHQ, and the study, through his own experience as a VA patient, as well as volunteering with veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI could not believe how quickly my ability to remember numbers came,\u201d he said of starting up BrainHQ. \u201cI was like, \u2018Whoa, this stuff works.\u2019 &#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, he said, he can easily remember strings of numbers, like online authentication codes easily, including well after he\u2019s typed them in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI can\u2019t think of any other reason for that except doing those exercises,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other exercises will drop you into a vignette and see how much you absorb from what you\u2019re seeing. It might be a conversation between a couple of people, and you\u2019re asked to recall what they talked about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow often do you space out, and you can\u2019t keep track of what\u2019s going on in a conversation?\u201d Bell said. \u201cPeople who have experienced TBI have not only the direct cognitive injury, but there\u2019s also fatigue, and there\u2019s depression. And these profoundly affect daily functioning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oppenheim said he has turned to BrainHQ when he\u2019s been feeling low, and it has helped him bounce back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is a sense of accomplishment, but also \u2015 I think that when I go out and do my two miles, I feel pretty good when I come back. To me, it\u2019s all related. I don\u2019t think you can separate the brain from the body anymore,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The BRAVE study focused on the 12-week dose, so Bell said that further study is needed to determine what kind of long-term program would best benefit TBI patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oppenheim said that he finds he has to pace himself, as he wants to continue using BrainHQ regularly. Three or four days week feels best, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think this is a great part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program for people who are also getting work services through the VA &#8230; or returning to college,\u201d Bell said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That it\u2019s an online program that anyone with an internet connection can do is a big bonus, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeing able to disseminate an intervention is a huge thing, and this is natural for that,\u201d Bell
