It now heads to the White House, where President Joe Biden is expected to sign it into law in coming days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The legislation ties the cost-of-living boost for veterans benefits to the planned increase in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/management\/pay-benefits\/2020\/10\/13\/retiree-cost-of-living-adjustments-sink-for-the-second-year-in-a-row\/\" target=\"_blank\">Social Security benefits<\/a>. Although the Social Security boost is automatic each year, lawmakers must approve the veterans benefits increase annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/09\/16\/veterans-disability-claims-backlog-expected-to-grow-in-coming-months\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1413724.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Veterans disability claims backlog expected to grow in coming months<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The number of cases pending for more than four months rose to more than 215,000 this week.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How much that boost will be next year is still not certain. The Social Security Administration is expected to announce the COLA rate for 2022 next month, based on economic trends over the last few months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That increase will go into effect for benefits checks sent out starting this December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cost-of-living bump hasn\u2019t been above 3.0 percent since 2011, and has averaged less than 1.3 percent over the last six years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But last month, officials from the Senior Citizens League predicted that next year\u2019s rise could top 6.2 percent, based on recent inflation and wage data released by federal economists. If so, it would be the largest increase since 1983 for Social Security and VA benefits recipients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawmakers praised Monday\u2019s bill passage as needed support for American veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe cost-of-living adjustment to veterans\u2019 benefits is so much more than a rate adjustment tied to inflation,\u201d said Rep. Mark Takano, D-Calif., in a statement. \u201cIt is a quality-of-life guarantee in the retirement years for veterans suffering with service-connected disabilities and ailments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/09\/17\/lgbt-vets-with-other-than-honorable-discharges-will-get-va-benefits-under-new-plan\/\" discharges will get VA benefits under new plan<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Department officials will announce the plan on Monday, which includes a review of service records to see if individuals&#039; eligibility for benefits should be approved.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Committee ranking member Mike Bost, R-Ill., said the increase is critical for veterans and families who rely on disability benefits as a primary source of income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMany veterans rely on disability compensation payments to make ends meet; this was especially true during the pandemic,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cFor millions of veterans and their families, this adjustment is more important now than ever before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The VA COLA increase applies to payouts for disability compensation, clothing allowance, dependency
