{"id":108902,"date":"2019-01-29T19:44:53","date_gmt":"2019-01-29T19:44:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/01\/29\/thousands-more-troops-headed-to-border-dod-says\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T12:33:58","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T12:33:58","slug":"thousands-more-troops-headed-to-border-dod-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2019\/01\/29\/thousands-more-troops-headed-to-border-dod-says\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Thousands\u2019 more troops headed to border, DoD says"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thousands of troops will be headed to the U.S.-Mexico border to meet President Donald Trump\u2019s request to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2019\/01\/15\/dod-extends-border-deployment-to-september\/\" target=_blank>enhance security<\/a> there, the Pentagon confirmed Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While no decision has been made on the exact number or make up of the troops, they will be tasked with adding more concertina wire to the U.S.-Mexico border and supporting surveillance, DoD said in a clarifying statement following Acting Defense Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pentagon\/2018\/12\/21\/with-mattis-out-is-shanahan-poised-to-rewire-the-pentagon\/\" target=_blank>Patrick Shanahan\u2019s<\/a> press briefing Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In that briefing, Shanahan said that DoD had informed DHS that the additional capabilities DHS was requesting would take \u201cseveral thousand\u201d additional forces to complete. We are currently sourcing the units involved and there will be an increase of a few thousand troops. We will provide more clarity on the numbers when we have it,&#8221; DoD said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The news comes just as the Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. Adam Smith, D-Wash., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/01\/29\/democrats-want-to-know-why-active-duty-troops-are-still-on-the-southern-us-border\/\" target=_blank>questioned<\/a> why active duty forces were still on the border at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBorder security is important, but we have other needs in the world,\u201d said Smith, during a Congressional hearing on the border deployment Tuesday. \u201cWe also have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/01\/29\/us-in-early-stages-of-withdrawal-as-isis-squeezed-into-a-few-square-miles\/\" target=_blank>ISIS and Syria <\/a>and Russia and China \u2026 (The southern border) is not primary to the military\u2019s mission.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current extension of active duty forces to the border runs
