Johnson VA Hospital, where earlier this year a former nursing assistant earlier this year pleaded guilty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/07\/15\/guilty-plea-in-poisoning-deaths-of-va-patients-still-leaves-lawsuits-lingering-questions\/\" target=_blank>multiple counts of murder<\/a> in a string of suspicious patient deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The assault charges against Kenneth Ramdat, of Silver Springs, Maryland, carry the possibility of up to five years in prison and fines of more than $1 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ramdat, 65, is accused of grabbing the breasts of two women working at the hospital in separate incidents in August and October 2019. Department of Justice officials announced the charges this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/07\/15\/watchdog-lawmakers-blast-vas-sexual-harassment-policies-as-inadequate\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6904514774_f1fbba9511_k.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Watchdog, lawmakers blast VA\u2019s sexual harassment policies as inadequate<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">In a government poll, more than one-quarter of women who worked for the department reported experiencing sexual harassment.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General, the FBI, the Veterans Affairs Police and the Clarksburg Police Department also cooperated in the investigation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, VA officials said they are conducting their own investigation into the charges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese are serious allegations and VA has no tolerance for this alleged behavior,\u201d said Wesley Walls, spokesman for the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center. &#8220;That\u2019s why this individual has been removed from patient care and has been isolated from fellow employees<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVA has asked law enforcement officials for evidence in this case to support personnel actions and will take appropriate action once law enforcement officials provide that evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials have sparred with outside advocates in recent years over accusations that the department\u2019s sexual assault training and response efforts aren\u2019t sufficient to counter systemic sexism within the department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In July, a Government Accountability Office report criticized VA for shortfalls in VA training, reporting and oversight of sexual harassment events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to federal survey data from 2014 to 2016 \u2014 the latest year the survey was conducted \u2014 26 percent of women who worked at VA reported some form of sexual harassment, and 14 percent of male employees said they were subject to similar unwelcome workplace behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to the report, VA officials said that the department in recent years \u201chas championed several efforts aimed at preventing harassment in all forms while improving employee experiences, retention and morale.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawmakers have criticized VA policies which do not require reporting of all sexual harassment complaints, which say could lead to under-reporting of cases and inefficient responses to the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/07\/15\/guilty-plea-in-poisoning-deaths-of-va-patients-still-leaves-lawsuits-lingering-questions\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/killernurse.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Guilty plea in poisoning deaths of VA patients still leaves lawsuits, lingering questions<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Families still don&#039;t have a motive for the crimes or answers on whether proper hospital safety protocols were in place.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Louis A. Johnson VA Hospital drew unwanted headlines in July when former nursing assistant Reta Mays pleaded guilty to seven counts of second-degree murder and one count of attempted murder in the deaths of eight patients in 2017 and 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Federal prosecutors said Mays used her position as a night shift worker to secretly poison patients with insulin injections, triggering seizures, comas and eventual death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No trial date has been set for the charges against
