Jay Raymond acknowledged the importance of developing a unique service culture after he assumed the role of chief of space operations for the new sixth branch of the U.S. military: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2019\/12\/21\/the-space-force-is-officially-the-sixth-military-branch-heres-what-that-means\/\" target=_blank>Space Force<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s going to be really important that we get this right,\u201d Raymond said. \u201cA uniform, a patch, a song. &#8230; There\u2019s a lot of work going on toward that end. It\u2019s going to take a long time to get to that point, but that\u2019s not something we\u2019re going to roll out on day one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/01\/13\/space-force-bible-blessing-spurs-protest\/\" target=\"_blank\">Space Force<\/a> officials will mull over the aforementioned strategies, as well as plans for a training regimen and personnel rank structure, over the next 18 months. That same period could also yield a rebranding of space-centric Air Force bases such as Vandenberg and Shriever.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/12\/21\/the-space-force-is-officially-the-sixth-military-branch-heres-what-that-means\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/rocket.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The Space Force is officially the sixth military branch. Here\u2019s what that means.<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">About 16,000 civilian and active duty personnel are now part of the Space Force, but the road to standing up the service is long.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every step of the process, Raymond reminded, is unchartered territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe haven\u2019t really done this since 1947,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new branch, which is expected to house 16,000 personnel coming over from Air Force Space Command, was signed into law by President Donald Trump last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSpace is the world\u2019s newest warfighting domain,\u201d the president said. \u201cAmid grave threats to our national security, American superiority in space is absolutely vital. We\u2019re leading, but we\u2019re not leading by enough, and very shortly we\u2019ll be leading by a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lead length aside, one item yet to be brought to the discussion table is what exactly these new leaders will be called.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marines, sailors, airmen, soldiers, and Coast Guardsmen are all well known, service-specific designations. But what about those occupying the future ranks of Space Force?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This question was posed on Twitter by @Nathanial_Free, with responses ranging from \u201cJedi\u201d to \u201cSpacers\u201d to \u201cStar Troopers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s an inquiry that prompted us to compile 10 terms of our own \u2014 ranging from logical to entirely unrealistic (see: Frizzles) \u2014 that could be fitting monikers for Space Force personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vote on your favorite in our poll below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><b>Trooper<\/b> &#8211; It\u2019s simple and acts as a nod to space-themed military personnel like storm troopers or the Mobile Infantry from \u201cStarship Troopers.\u201d Additionally, the public will have very little to update when changing their bumper stickers to read, \u201cSupport our Troopers.\u201d<\/li><li><b>Interstellar<\/b> &#8211; Another nod to a space film, but also one that could be shortened to \u201cstellar,\u201d which is fun to imagine within the confines of recruiting slogans. \u201cDon\u2019t just be good. Be Stellar.\u201d<\/li><li><b>Oddity<\/b> &#8211; The branch is already unlike any other. Why not lean into its uniqueness and make the entire service David Bowie-themed, with the famous song serving as the official Space Force hymn? <i>Welcome to Space Force. You\u2019ve really made the grade. <\/i><\/li><li><b>Cowboy<\/b> &#8211; Bring the past and the future together for the final frontier as a Space Force Cowboy.<\/li><li><b>Frizzle <\/b>&#8211; Unquestionably brave 4th grade science teacher Ms. Frizzle once dared to pilot a <a href=\"https:\/\/images.app.goo.gl\/fvdeKVSCygKkchae7\" target=_blank>magic school bus<\/a> through space. It\u2019s time she receive some much-deserved recognition.<\/li><li><b>Callisto <\/b>&#8211; The second largest moon of Jupiter \u2014 behind Ganymede \u2014 would give an intense-sounding ring to the job.<\/li><li><b>Melange<\/b> &#8211; The valuable spice in the 1965 science fiction novel \u201cDune\u201d enhances mental awareness and extends life. All good things.<\/li><li><b>Zodiac <\/b>&#8211; Protect U.S. and allied interests in space while telling all those Capricorns how unforgiving and condescending they are.<\/li><li><b>Vulcan <\/b>&#8211; \u201cStar Wars\u201d got its due.
