{"id":116255,"date":"2019-06-20T18:02:05","date_gmt":"2019-06-20T18:02:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/06\/20\/trumps-july-4th-celebration-to-feature-military-in-parade-demonstrations\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T13:54:44","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T13:54:44","slug":"trumps-july-4th-celebration-to-feature-military-in-parade-demonstrations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2019\/06\/20\/trumps-july-4th-celebration-to-feature-military-in-parade-demonstrations\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump\u2019s July 4th celebration to feature military in parade, demonstrations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military demonstrations and flyovers are set to accompany President Trump\u2019s Fourth of July celebration, months after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/08\/16\/trumps-military-parade-estimated-to-cost-80-million-more-than-previously-estimated\/\" target=_blank>president\u2019s planned military parade<\/a> in Washington was postponed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The military will be in the spotlight for at least two of the events on July 4th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Fourth of July parade in Washington will include a fife and drum corps, military units and drill teams as well as floats and \u201cgiant balloons,\u201d according to Interior Secretary David Bernhardt, who released details of the celebration on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2019\/06\/19\/trump-to-honor-us-military-during-fourth-of-july-address\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP19170069403151.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Trump to honor US military during Fourth of July address<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">President Donald Trump\u2019s participation in the nation\u2019s annual Fourth of July celebration will include a Trump speech honoring America\u2019s armed forces, along with music, military demonstrations and flyovers, the administration announced Wednesday, about two weeks before the patriotic holiday.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A separate \u201cSalute to America\u201d celebration, planned for later in the day, will honor each of the branches of the military and include military demonstrations and flyovers, performances from the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, the U.S. Army Band and the Armed Forces Chorus, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, the World War II Memorial and Constitution Gardens will be open to the public to view fireworks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is no more appropriate place to celebrate the anniversary of American independence than among the Nation\u2019s monuments on the National Mall and the memorials to the service men and women who have defended the United States for the past 243 years,\u201d Bernhardt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/pressreleases\/secretary-bernhardt-announces-events-2019-independence-day-celebration-nations-capital\" target=_blank>said in the statement Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor the first time in many years, the World War II Memorial and areas around the Reflecting Pool will be open for the public to enjoy a stunning fireworks display and an address by our commander in chief,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are excited to open these new areas so that more visitors may experience this year\u2019s Independence Day celebration in our nation\u2019s capital.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Army Military District of Washington referred questions to the Pentagon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump is slated to speak at the Lincoln Memorial, a plan that attracted scrutiny from House Democrats earlier this month. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., Rep. Ra\u00fal Grijalva, D-Ariz., and Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minn., cautioned his remarks could be interpreted as a \u201cpartisan campaign rally on the Mall at public expense.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRather than spending millions of taxpayer dollars on what could appear to be a campaign rally, those funds would be far better spent addressing the Department\u2019s maintenance backlog,\u201d the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.majorityleader.gov\/sites\/democraticwhip.house.gov\/files\/Letter%20to%20President%20Trump%20Fourth%20of%20July%20FINAL%20060519.pdf\" target=_blank> lawmakers wrote in a letter <\/a>to the White House.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/08\/17\/president-pentagon-put-off-washington-parade\/?utm_source=clavis\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">President, Pentagon put off Washington parade <\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The president has long pushed for holding a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/08\/16\/trumps-military-parade-estimated-to-cost-80-million-more-than-previously-estimated\/\" target=_blank> military parade <\/a>in the nation\u2019s capital, after he attended the 2017 Bastille Day celebration in France as a guest of French President Emmanuel Macron. The event featured French troops marching and military tanks rolling along the parade route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/08\/17\/president-pentagon-put-off-washington-parade\/?utm_source=clavis\" target=_blank>military parade in Washington<\/a> was scheduled for Nov. 10, 2018, but Trump ultimately postponed the event after defense officials told media outlets the event would likely cost more than $90 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The D.C.
