In some cases, those individuals could have lost thousands of dollars in housing support over the next six months without the bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., who sponsored the measure in the Senate, praised the bill signing as a critical support step for veterans and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2021\/12\/16\/student-vets-taking-remote-classes-next-semester-will-still-get-full-gi-bill-benefits-thanks-to-new-plan\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2358105.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Student vets taking remote classes next semester will still get full GI Bill benefits thanks to new plan<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Pandemic protections for GI Bill students were set to expire on Dec. 21.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStudent veterans who are learning remotely deserve their full VA housing benefits, and this legislation will make sure they are not unfairly penalized for pursuing their education online during the pandemic,\u201d she said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[The law allows] veterans in Nevada and across the country to celebrate the holidays without worrying about how they will pay rent during their upcoming semester.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At issue is how post-9\/11 GI Bill benefits are paid out to students who attend college classes remotely, rather than in-person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students using the veterans education benefit receive money for tuition plus a monthly housing stipend. Individuals enrolled in traditional in-person classes receive the full financial benefit, while students in online-only classes get half of that housing stipend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That became a major financial issue when the coronavirus pandemic forced college administrators to start moving classes online in spring 2020. Congress passed emergency legislation then \u2014 active until Dec. 21, 2021 \u2014 to allow VA administrators to keep paying out the full, expected housing stipends instead of cutting the support checks by half.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2021\/11\/22\/student-veterans-face-huge-cuts-in-housing-stipends-if-congress-doesnt-act-soon\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Ally.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Student veterans face huge cuts in housing stipends if Congress doesn\u2019t act soon<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Emergency authorities which prevented students from seeing their stipends cut in half are set to expire in December.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference between half of a housing stipend and the full payout can range from a few hundred dollars to nearly $2,000, since the payouts depend on the location of the student and school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new law pushes those authorities back until next summer. Numerous college campuses have announced plans in recent weeks to remain fully or partially online for the spring 2022 semester, but have also expressed hope that all classes may return to normal, in-person sessions by fall 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The REMOTE Act was one of the last pieces of legislative business handled by lawmakers before they left Capitol Hill for
