{"id":118694,"date":"2015-12-07T18:11:35","date_gmt":"2015-12-07T18:11:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2015\/12\/07\/report-va-ig-ousted-over-indecent-acts\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T13:57:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T13:57:09","slug":"report-va-ig-ousted-over-indecent-acts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2015\/12\/07\/report-va-ig-ousted-over-indecent-acts\/","title":{"rendered":"Report: VA IG ousted over indecent acts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Department of Veterans Affairs is staying silent following a media report that its former top watchdog resigned <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">was fired <\/span>for <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">after he was caught<\/span>\u00a0masturbating in front of others, including teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jon Wooditch, who served as an acting and deputy\u00a0inspector general<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> and a deputy<\/span>, left the department in 2008 after he was caught masturbating at the agency\u2019s all-glass conference room that is visible to the public, <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2015\/12\/06\/va-cop-chose-the-wrong-beat\/\">according to The Daily Caller<\/a>. An undisclosed investigation by the Interior Department obtained by the media website said that Wooditch repeatedly denied his\u00a0lewd conduct.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wooditch was first caught with pornographic images on his computer in 2003 before the VA &#8220;counseled him&#8221; on his behavior, according to The Daily Caller. He was promoted to acting IG soon after, until it was announced that George Opfer would become the permanent IG in November 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under Wooditch\u2019s tenure, the VA disclosed a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.va.gov\/oig\/52\/reports\/2005\/VAOIG-04-02887-169.pdf\">national audit of outpatient scheduling<\/a>, which admitted that outpatient wait times were on the rise. It didn&#8217;t happen\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">wasn\u2019t <\/span>until news broke last April that veterans were dying while waiting for care, specifically at the Phoenix VA hospital. Outcry from veterans and public officials sparked VA Secretary <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.militarytimes.com\/article\/20140530\/NEWS05\/305300045\/VA-Secretary-Shinseki-resigns\">Eric Shinseki\u2019s resignation in 2014<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wooditch had testified <a href=\"http:\/\/www.va.gov\/oig\/publications\/statements.asp\">multiple times<\/a>\u00a0to Congress about the integrity needed to sustain veteran care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In July 2008, a few teachers staying at the Renaissance Hotel nearby the Washington, D.C., IG headquarters saw a man pleasuring himself over the course of a week \u2014 many times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One teacher, cited in the investigation, said: &#8220;He went from rubbing himself over the top of his clothes to disrobing and fondling his penis,&#8221; The Daily Caller said. On another day, another teacher saw &#8220;Wooditch alone in the VA-OIG conference room naked from the waist up.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wooditch later denied he was even in the building, although security cameras caught him on tape and a number of teachers picked him out during a photograph lineup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The VA Office of Inspector General leadership who would have had knowledge of the allegations and investigation are no longer with the VA OIG,&#8221; said VA spokeswoman Catherine Gromek. &#8220;Because current OIG leadership only recently became aware of the matter, we cannot comment further on the allegations or the investigation,&#8221; Gromek said on Monday\u00a0in an email to Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wooditch retired with his pension before administrative or criminal charges could be brought against him, The Daily Caller
