{"id":120201,"date":"2019-09-04T21:06:07","date_gmt":"2019-09-04T21:06:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/09\/04\/5th-special-forces-group-just-went-old-school-with-their-uniforms-during-a-training-exercise\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:43:56","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:43:56","slug":"5th-special-forces-group-just-went-old-school-with-their-uniforms-during-a-training-exercise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/off-duty\/2019\/09\/04\/5th-special-forces-group-just-went-old-school-with-their-uniforms-during-a-training-exercise\/","title":{"rendered":"5th Special Forces Group just went old school with their uniforms during a training exercise"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Members of the Legion \u2014 the US Army\u2019s 5th Special Forces Group \u2014 threw it back to the group\u2019s Vietnam War days with an unusual and outrageously cool choice of uniform during a training exercise in Kentucky, back in mid-August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of donning the customary OCP-patterned uniforms, popular with US Special Operations Command, the Legion\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/image\/5685097\/us-army-special-forces-partner-with-screaming-eagles-raid-reconnaissance-exercise\" target=\"_blank\">Green Berets were photographed<\/a> wearing the Vietnam-era tiger stripe pattern \u2014 somewhat unused and mostly forgotten by the US military for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/off-duty\/gearscout\/irons\/2019\/08\/30\/the-army-just-got-closer-to-ditching-the-m4-and-saw-for-a-next-generation-weapon\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Read More:<\/b> The Army just got a lot closer to replacing the M4 with a much deadlier rifle<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Pentagon, these Green Berets with 5th SFG (known as Legionnaires) were training with the \u201cWidowmakers\u201d \u2014 soldiers of the Army\u2019s 75th Cavalry Regiment, attached to the 101st Airborne Division\u2019s 2nd Brigade Combat Team. Iman Broady-Chin)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the end of the exercise, Legionnaires and Widowmakers accumulated over two weeks of training in mission planning, casualty care and battlefield trauma medicine, as well as direct action operations. From the images posted online, it\u2019s unclear whether the tiger striped Legionnaires were acting in an OPFOR role, simulating enemy forces, or were on a blue team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Images taken by the 5th SFG\u2019s public affairs team show Legionnaires in jungle tiger stripe uniforms, replete with full-color patches on their shoulders, including the Special Forces and Ranger tabs, as well as the Special Forces arrowhead. Iman Broady-Chin)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tiger stripe\u2019s roots are mildly ambiguous, but the US military\u2019s unofficial adoption of the pattern came about during the Vietnam War, where South Vietnamese forces were already wearing uniforms emblazoned with the unique camouflage. Chances were that if you spotted a guy overseas carrying a tricked out rifle wearing tiger stripe cammies during the war, he belonged to one of the US military\u2019s various special operations groups including the SEALs, MACV-SOG, Force Recon, and Special Forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of the war, American special operations largely moved on from tiger stripe, returning to a more traditional woodland pattern. While 5th SFG hails from those Vietnam days, and many of its \u201960s and \u201970s-era Legionnaires likely wore the pattern in-theater, chances are that Special Forces aren\u2019t bringing back this camo into widespread usage&#8230; though it\u2019s still incredibly cool to see when mixed in with modern warfighting hardware.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Instead of donning
