The list even includes a font specification for professional correspondence \u2014 Arial, size 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/armypubs.army.mil\/epubs\/DR_pubs\/DR_a\/ARN32225-AR_25-50-003-WEB-6.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Army Regulation 25\u201350<\/a>, section 1-19 of \u201cPreparing and Managing Correspondence,\u201d which specifies type fonts and sizes, the clich\u00e9 sans serif lettering is preferred, which, if you know anything about the Army, essentially means it\u2019s mandatory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUse type fonts and sizes that make the correspondence easy to read and understand,\u201d the regulation reads. \u201cPreferred type font is Arial. Unusual type styles, such as Script, will not be used in official correspondence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But unusual beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And Comic Sans, neither script nor odd, should be in the running for the official Army font.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is simplistic, nostalgic, aesthetically pleasing and easily enjoyed by everyone and anyone with even a smidge of reading skill. Crayon eaters can attest, it is the best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arial, Helvetica and Calibri, while standard, are also incredibly boring. And forget Times New Roman. That\u2019s for squares, not soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comic Sans is computer meets elementary school handwriting, a delightful flourish of boyish humor that reflects the true nature of skaters, shammers and most of the E-4 mafia. This font, like many troops, has a devil-may-care insouciance that\u2019s just so darn enviable. It\u2019s the Camaro of typefaces, but without the soaring APR. Comic Sans is free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If all the Army\u2019s marketing materials were printed with Comic Sans, recruitment may go through the roof. Troop numbers aren\u2019t where they should be? Don\u2019t blame politics or a perceived lack of benefits. Change the text of recruiting pamphlets to Comic Sans and watch prospective soldiers line up around the block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And think of the PowerPoint presentations. Phrases like \u201clethality\u201d and \u201cstrategic deterrence\u201d carry so much more weight when they\u2019re shown in a font that soldiers can\u2019t help but remember because it\u2019s just so&#8230; distinguished. Arial could never.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, if Comic Sans isn\u2019t on the table, alternatives the U.S. Army might consider are Webdings and Wingdings, because contrary to popular belief, everyone loves a puzzle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just think of deciphering emails as if each were attempting to crack the code of the Zodiac Killer \u2014 the Army
