suicide prompts new, speedier process for troops seeking help"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Service members can now confidentially request a referral from their leadership to receive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/2022\/05\/26\/services-detail-plans-to-beef-up-mental-health-services-for-troops-families\/\" target=\"_blank\">mental health services<\/a>, thanks to a 2021 law the Defense Department implemented Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Troops can make a request with any officer or noncommissioned officer E-5 and above in their chain of command, for any reason, to be evaluated as soon as possible, streamlining a process that in the past could be slowed down by commanders seeking details or waiting to process referrals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congress mandated the change in the 2022 National Defense Authorization Act, which incorporated the Brandon Act, named for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2019\/12\/05\/lawmakers-seek-answers-on-rising-military-and-veterans-suicide-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aviation Electrician\u2019s Mate 3rd Class Brandon Caserta<\/a>, 21, who died by suicide in June 2018 while on duty with Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 28 at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe honor Petty Officer Brandon Caserta\u2019s memory by ensuring that our Military Services have procedures and processes in place that allow service members to seek help confidentially, for any reason, at any time and in any environment, and aim to reduce the stigma associated with seeking mental health care,\u201d Gil Cisneros, the Pentagon\u2019s top personnel official, said in a news release Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the years following his death, <a href=\"https:\/\/thebrandonact.org\/about-the-brandon-act\/brandons-final-words\/\" target=\"_blank\">Caserta\u2019s family pushed for changes<\/a> in how the military addresses mental health issues, openly sharing Caserta\u2019s suicide note and speaking with lawmakers and senior military leaders about the alleged hazing and bullying he suffered.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2022\/10\/20\/active-duty-suicides-dropped-15-in-2021-but-overall-trend-is-upward\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1000w_q75-9.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Active duty suicides dropped 15% in 2021, but overall trend is upward<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Suicide rates have steadily climbed over the past 10 years, despite some rises and dips.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Defense Health Agency will oversee implementation of each military service\u2019s new process, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/Releases\/Release\/Article\/3386581\/dod-announces-implementation-of-the-brandon-act\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Pentagon said in a release Friday,<\/a> which will include training and education for service members and leadership on the new process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The services have 45 days to implement the new policy for their active duty components, according to the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also this year, the Defense Department is implementing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/02\/24\/keeping-firearms-out-of-easy-reach-key-to-preventing-military-suicides\/\" target=\"_blank\">recommendations from an independent review commission on suicide<\/a>, including changes to suicide prevention training and possible new policies on gun possession and purchasing on military
