A new program at William &amp; Mary\u2019s Raymond A. Mason School of Business is trying to open those doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The William &amp; Mary <a href=\"https:\/\/mason.wm.edu\/news\/press-releases\/2022\/veteran-entrepreneur-scholars-program-press-release-11.11.2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Veteran Entrepreneur Scholars program<\/a>, which launched with a pilot cohort this summer was enabled by an anonymous alumni gift. It\u2019s taught boot camp style \u2014 with the aim of helping veterans start their own businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVets are sharp and resilient,\u201d said Will Gregory, Veteran Entrepreneur Scholars Lead instructor and founder. \u201cThey keep their sense of humor when everything is going crazy. That\u2019s a superpower for founding a company. Everything when you are doing a startup is breaking down. You have to problem solve on the fly with sometimes not much information and lots of demand on you. The military is one of the best places to cultivate those founder skills.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a study by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuit.com\/company\/press-room\/press-releases\/2021\/intuit-quickbooks-projects-17-million-new-entrepreneurs-to-join-rapidly-growing-small-business-economy-in-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\">Intuit QuickBooks<\/a>, 17 million new entrepreneurs will join the economy in 2022. And veteran-owned businesses \u2014 like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2019\/07\/03\/black-rifle-coffees-music-video-showcases-the-militarys-day-to-day-monotonies-the-public-never-sees\/\" target=\"_blank\">Black Rifle Coffee Company<\/a> \u2014 are on the rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jonathan \u201cJD\u201d Due, executive director of the Center for Military Transition at William &amp; Mary, said guiding vets toward entrepreneurship can mean different things \u2014 as a primary job or as a second income stream. And small entrepreneurial efforts are also seen as a way to problem solve \u2013 while generating additional capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat combination is potent for both problem solving and for building businesses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veteran support and empowerment programs need to exist, however, because becoming an entrepreneur doesn\u2019t just mean being trained. It requires support and community outreach to access things like funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charles \u201cChuck\u201d Williamson, an Army veteran who is currently pursuing an MBA at William &amp; Mary, went through the pilot program. He and a friend have been working to develop a game that teaches military tactical skills and he said the program opened his eyes to all that goes into launching a successful venture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe military is great at teaching you to deal with setbacks and challenges but not really the actual specific skills like meeting with investors or incorporating a business,\u201d Williamson said. \u201cThey teach you how to do an interview, not how to raise capital. But through the program, I learned a lot of things that I needed to learn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Williamson said he will continue to work with his friend on their game \u2014 while he completes his MBA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gregory said the first official cohort is scheduled to kick off at the end of November and there have been lots of applicants. They plan to keep cohorts small at first, so each group gets to know one another and provide peer support and mentorship. Also in the works is an active support system for follow-up, with cohorts being organized on a rolling basis for now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur goal is that they are able
