Whether they were traded as valued currency alongside MRE contents or buried under a pile of white socks at the bottom of a care package, for those downrange, they offered a taste of home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bringer of that joy, Pop-Tart creator William \u201cBill\u201d Post, died on Feb. 10 at age 96.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Grand Rapids, Michigan, native deployed with the U.S. military in the Pacific post-World War II before returning home. There, he resumed his high school job at Hekman Biscuits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe Father of the Pop-Tart.\u201d<br><br>Did you know the leader behind the popular American snack is from Grand Rapids? This morning only on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/wwmtnews?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@wwmtnews<\/a> we\u2019ll introduce you to Bill Post and how he brought the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/PopTart?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PopTart<\/a> to life. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/T42WrjumLh\">pic.twitter.com\/T42WrjumLh<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Alexia Petrovic (@lexie_petrovic) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/lexie_petrovic\/status\/1465611244812054529?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 30, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter serving in the Army Air Corps in occupied Japan, he returned to the part time job at Hekman and also attended Calvin College for 2 years,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/grand-rapids\/2024\/02\/grand-rapids-man-inventor-of-pop-tarts-dies-at-96.html\" target=\"_blank\">according to Post\u2019s obituary<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That biscuit plant would later become what is known today as Keebler. It was there that Post cemented his name in the annals of pastry history. While working as plant manager in the 1960s, Kellogg reached out to him about a collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn 1964 I answered the telephone and Kellogg asked if they could come see some of our equipment,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/wwmt.com\/news\/local\/mr-pop-tart-grand-rapids-man-reflects-on-the-snack-he-created-57-years-later\" target=\"_blank\">Post told WWMT in 2021<\/a>. \u201cI said, \u2018yeah.\u2019 They came and looked at our plant. &#8230; They said they wanted something for the toaster, but they didn\u2019t know how to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"517\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/57116337_10156544084203229_553054065303486464_n.jpeg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-108083\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/57116337_10156544084203229_553054065303486464_n.jpeg.jpg 720w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/57116337_10156544084203229_553054065303486464_n.jpeg.jpg?resize=300,215 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">An airman unloads boxes of Pop-Tarts, one of the most sought-after snacks among service members, at home or abroad. (Minot AFB\/Facebook)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Post set to work figuring out exactly how to make a breakfast food that could easily be cooked in a toaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI assembled an amazing team that developed Kellogg\u2019s concept of a shelf-stable toaster pastry into a fine product that we could bring to market in the span of just four months,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result was two dough sheets with filling in the middle. The finishing touch \u2014 frosting \u2014 wasn\u2019t part of original the plan, but Post\u2019s improvisational decision to glaze the pastry turned out to be a hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Post, while testing out the experimental pastries, would bring them home to his children. While he said most of the products were duds in their eyes, the Pop-Tarts were a hit with his family as an after-school treat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His obituary notes that despite being credited as the inventor of Pop-Tarts, Post always viewed it as a team effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, rival Post Consumer Brands was working on a competitor: Country Squares. However, Pop-Tarts made it to market first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s a funny story. David Clemenko\/Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.delish.com\/food-news\/a46972\/surprising-pop-tarts-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\">Delish reported<\/a> that a book called \u201cAmerican Food by the Decades\u201d notes that the original the name for these delectable treats was \u201cFruit Scones,\u201d but the moniker was changed after Andy Warhol and his 1960s pop art inspired the branding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The original Pop-Tarts, which went to market in November of 1964, came in apple currant, blueberry, cinnamon sugar, and Post\u2019s favorite: strawberry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Post worked for 41 years at Keebler before moving on as a consultant to Kellogg. He married his high school sweetheart, and they were together for 72 years. The couple retired in Grand Rapids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn spite of an extraordinary life and legendary accomplishments, Bill remained a humble man of God with a
