The military said it was investigating the incident, declining to elaborate further.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2024\/10\/19\/how-one-warship-thwarting-a-houthi-attack-a-year-ago-changed-the-navy\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/8082818.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">How one warship thwarting a Houthi attack a year ago changed the Navy<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Navy&#039;s fierce and ongoing battle to stop Iran-backed Houthi attacks in the Red Sea began with the USS Carney a year ago, on Oct. 19, 2023.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn&#8217;t immediately clear what kind of aircraft was shot down in the low-quality night video. The Houthis, in a later statement, claimed to have downed an American MQ-9 Reaper drone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Houthis have surface-to-air missiles \u2014 such as the Iranian missile known as the 358 \u2014 capable of downing aircraft. Iran denies arming the rebels, though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/video\/2024\/01\/12\/look-inside-iranian-tech-supplied-to-houthi-rebels-from-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tehran-manufactured weaponry has been found on the battlefield<\/a> and in sea shipments heading to Yemen for the Shiite Houthi rebels despite a United Nations arms embargo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Houthis have been a key component of Iran&#8217;s self-described \u201cAxis of Resistance&#8221; during the Mideast wars that includes Lebanon&#8217;s Hezbollah, Hamas and other militant groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since Houthis seized the country\u2019s north and its capital of Sanaa in 2014, the rebels have shot down MQ-9 Reaper drones in Yemen in 2017, 2019, 2023 and 2024. The U.S. military has declined to offer a total figure for the number of drones it has lost during that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reapers, which cost around $30 million apiece, can fly at altitudes up to 50,000 feet and have an endurance of up to 24 hours before needing to land. The aircraft have been flown by both the U.S. military and the CIA over Yemen for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Houthis have targeted more than 90 merchant vessels with missiles and drones since the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip started in October 2023. They <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/israel-palestinians-red-sea-ship-yemen-houthis-65b611ff878a411900037e7c9a8ee17b\" target=\"_blank\">seized one vessel<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2024\/06\/16\/us-military-targets-houthi-radar-sites-in-yemen\/\" target=\"_blank\">sank two in the campaign<\/a> that has also killed four sailors. Other missiles and drones have either been intercepted by a U.S.-led coalition in the Red Sea or failed to reach their targets, which have also included Western military vessels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rebels maintain that they target ships linked to Israel, the U.S. or the U.K. to force an end to Israel\u2019s campaign against Hamas in Gaza. However, many of the ships attacked have little or no connection to the conflict, including some bound for Iran. The tempo of the Houthi sea attacks also has waxed and waned over the months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In October, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2024\/10\/17\/us-stealth-bombers-strike-5-houthi-weapons-bunkers\/\" target=\"_blank\">the U.S. military unleashed B-2 stealth bombers<\/a>
