Jay Inslee and Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo activated National Guard members to support local and state law enforcement. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek hasn\u2019t activated her state\u2019s National Guard, but her office said Monday that Guardsmen are \u201ctrained and ready\u201d in case they\u2019re needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe width=\"315\" height=\"560\"\nsrc=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1m6UvTXZeZU\"\ntitle=\"YouTube video player\"\nframeborder=\"0\"\nallow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\"\nallowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a joint bulletin, DHS and the FBI warned of potential violence from domestic extremists who believe claims of election fraud or harbor anger toward perceived political adversaries. The agencies wrote that extremists would likely target voting locations, ballot drop-boxes, voter registration locations, political rallies, campaign events and the offices of political parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the lead-up to the election, some of those warnings have become realities. An <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tempe-arizona-dnc-office-shootings-6f93528b571cd4c148dfd1612600854a\" target=\"_blank\">Arizona man was accused of shooting at a Democratic National Committee office<\/a> last week near Phoenix. Also last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/vote-ballot-drop-box-democracy-fire-f66c52f774955106fb9e7c8172825cff\">ballot boxes in Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, were set on fire<\/a>, and hundreds of ballots were destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to the ballot-box fire in his state, <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.wa.gov\/news\/2024\/inslee-activates-some-washington-national-guard-members-support-public-safety-activities-related\" target=\"_blank\">Inslee sent a letter Friday to Maj. Gen. Gent Welsh, the adjutant general of the Washington Military Department<\/a>, activating the National Guard to standby status. The activation will expire just after midnight Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe U.S. Department of Homeland Security has warned that threats to election infrastructure during the 2024 election cycle remains high. The southwest region of Washington state has already experienced specific instances of election-related unrest,\u201d Inslee wrote. \u201cI am directing the Washington National Guard to prepare to provide critical public safety support by activating necessary Washington National Guard personnel in a standby status.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/extremism-disinformation\/2024\/10\/29\/conspiracies-calls-for-violence-spike-online-ahead-of-election-day\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/70c6e3db-7977-43ec-9bda-db0fac0a0592.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Conspiracies, calls for violence spike online ahead of Election Day<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Posts about election denialism, the false belief that elections are unfair and could be \u201cstolen,\u201d increased by 317% on Telegram and 105% on Gab in October.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inslee wrote that the Guardsmen could support local law enforcement and the Washington State Patrol to \u201cprotect vital infrastructure related to carrying out free and fair elections and to respond to any unrest related to the 2024 general election.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Nevada, one of seven key swing states, Lombardo <a href=\"https:\/\/gov.nv.gov\/Newsroom\/PRs\/2024\/2024-10-28_election-preparedness-update\/\" target=\"_blank\">said he would activate 60 members of the National Guard<\/a> in Carson City and Las Vegas to standby status on Election Day. If called upon, they\u2019ll help with tasks like traffic enforcement, building security and communications, the governor\u2019s office said in a statement last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter consulting with stakeholders across the state, I have decided that a precautionary activation of the National Guard makes sense at this time. We do not expect that these personnel will need to be deployed,\u201d\u202fLombardo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Oregon governor\u2019s office will monitor instances of voter intimidation or election interference and coordinate with local, state and federal agencies \u201cto ensure Oregon voters can safely cast their ballot,\u201d Kotek\u2019s office said in an email. While the Oregon National Guard hasn\u2019t been activated, it could be called upon to support law enforcement \u201cif they reach their capacity,\u201d the office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">William Banks, a Syracuse University law professor who wrote a book about the domestic role of the U.S. military, described the governors\u2019 actions as reasonable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe precautionary measures by governors \u2014 activating or placing on alert members of their state National Guard \u2014 are reasonable in the same way that similar call-ups would precede a major storm that threatens a state,\u201d Banks said. \u201cThe governors would order the Guard personnel to quell any violent disturbances, but not to interfere in any way with voting or counting. Some municipalities have implemented safeguards like panic buttons and bulletproof glass, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/election-workers-2024-threats-security-police-trump-kamala-biden-steal-c4f27414a5a90b67983b0349a370dd13\" target=\"_blank\">The Associated Press reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Justice Department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-nj\/pr\/us-attorneys-office-announces-election-day-program-protect-election-workers-and-voting\" target=\"_blank\">established a special hotline for people to report harassment or other types of voting interference<\/a>. The hotline \u2014 888-636-6596 \u2014 became available Saturday and will remain open until Nov. 8. And the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2024\/10\/23\/veterans-urge-americans-against-political-violence-ahead-of-election\/\" target=\"_blank\">Committee for Safe and Secure Elections created a public service announcement<\/a>, in which local election officials and retired military officers urged Americans to not interfere with the voting process or engage in political violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the concerns, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/extremism-disinformation\/2024\/10\/29\/conspiracies-calls-for-violence-spike-online-ahead-of-election-day\/\" target=\"_blank\">extremism experts are predicting any election-related violence would likely occur after Election Day<\/a>, rather than while voting is taking place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDon\u2019t let fear and intimidation keep you from exercising your right,\u201d said Wendy Via, co-founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism. \u201cPeople need to be prepared and cautious, but not afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>This story was produced in partnership with <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mvj.network\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Military Veterans in Journalism<\/i><\/a><i>.
