{"id":127607,"date":"2024-09-12T18:36:32","date_gmt":"2024-09-12T18:36:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/09\/12\/jd-vance-would-consider-privatizing-some-va-services-if-elected\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:35:58","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:35:58","slug":"jd-vance-would-consider-privatizing-some-va-services-if-elected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2024\/09\/12\/jd-vance-would-consider-privatizing-some-va-services-if-elected\/","title":{"rendered":"JD Vance would consider privatizing some VA services if elected"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Editor\u2019s note: This report has been updated with a comment from JD Vance\u2019s campaign staff.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2024\/08\/06\/jd-vance-represents-veterans-on-ballot-but-some-ask-at-what-cost\/\" target=\"_blank\">Republican Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance<\/a> in an interview Wednesday said he would \u201cconsider\u201d plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/04\/11\/vets-groups-and-lawmakers-say-theyre-against-it-but-what-does-privatization-of-veterans-affairs-really-mean\/\" target=\"_blank\">privatize parts of the Department of Veterans Affairs<\/a> and push for more private-health care options for patients in the system if elected this fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an appearance on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HrgmwtpAsWc&#038;t=2766s\" target=\"_blank\">Shawn Ryan Show podcast<\/a> released Wednesday, the Ohio senator (who is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2024\/09\/11\/harris-trump-trade-barbs-over-afghanistan-and-ukraine-during-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\"> former President Donald Trump\u2019s <\/a>running mate) also said he would fire or cut thousands of federal civilian jobs, including many within VA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProbably 90% to 95% of the people at the VA are fantastic human beings, but then you\u2019ve got a small slice of the VA [who are] bad apples that makes it really hard for everybody else to do their job,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is why veterans spend three hours on the phone trying to get an appointment. This is why you have people commit suicide, because they\u2019re waiting 28 days to get an appointment with the doctor. It\u2019s a small sliver of the VA, but you can fire those people, right? Give the people who are doing their job a raise. Fire the people who aren\u2019t doing their jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/veterans\/2018\/04\/11\/vets-groups-and-lawmakers-say-theyre-against-it-but-what-does-privatization-of-veterans-affairs-really-mean\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_13102205629.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Vets groups and lawmakers say they\u2019re against it \u2014 but what does \u2018privatization\u2019 of Veterans Affairs really mean?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The term will command much of the debate at the new VA secretary&#039;s confirmation hearing, but different groups have different definitions.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Ryan and Vance are veterans. Vance said he has used VA hospitals for his own health care in the past, but understands frustration with the system and would listen to proposals for privatizing parts of the department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Ryan asked \u201cwould you ever consider privatized health care for veterans?\u201d Vance responded by saying \u201cI think I\u2019d consider it\u201d before shifting to thoughts on Trump\u2019s past veterans policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think that there are areas where the VA actually works very well,\u201d he said. \u201cSo I would not say, \u2018get rid of the whole thing.\u2019 But I would say, \u2018give people more choice.\u2019 I think you\u2019ll save money in the process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A spokesman for Vance on Thursday afternoon denied that the nominee supports defunding parts of the VA and blasted the campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris for creating a controversy where one did not exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the full exchange, Senator Vance clearly says he would not privatize the Department of Veterans Affairs,\u201d William Martin said in a statement. \u201cThe Kamala campaign is once again twisting his words and lying about his position because they have nothing but a record of abject failure to run on. They should be ashamed for intentionally lying about a veteran when it comes to providing quality care and coverage for our veterans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue of cutting back VA services and shifting those funds to private-sector doctors and businesses has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2016\/09\/28\/fight-over-privatizing-veterans-care-moves-from-campaign-trail-to-house\/\" target=\"_blank\">a point of contention in the veterans community in recent years<\/a>, especially since then-President Donald Trump signed legislation designed to make it easier for veterans to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/01\/31\/new-va-health-care-rules-trump-overreach-or-more-choice-for-vets\/\" target=\"_blank\">medical appointments outside of VA <\/a>paid for with taxpayer dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democratic critics \u2014 and some veterans advocates \u2014 have charged that continuing to expand such policies would lead to dismantling VA funding and programming in favor of private-sector profits, a charge that Republican lawmakers have angrily refuted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI love being lectured and gaslit by Democratic members on this panel \u2026 about how we\u2019re trying to privatize the VA,\u201d Rep. Ei Crane, R-Ariz., said during a House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee hearing on the VA budget on Tuesday. \u201cThat is absolutely not what we are trying to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The VA budget has grown significantly in recent years. In fiscal 2001, the entire VA budget amounted to $48 billion in spending. Ten years ago, that total was $153.9 billion. The request for fiscal 2025 from the department is nearly $330 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials said roughly 40% of all veterans health care appointments in fiscal 2023 were handled by doctors outside the department\u2019s health care system, and that the number of veterans using Community Care options has risen by 45% since fiscal 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Vance said during the podcast that too many veterans are still forced to drive hours to receive VA health care instead of being given private-sector options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy force a veteran to drive two and a half hours to a VA facility when he can get cheaper care right in his backyard?\u201d he said. \u201cSo I do think that we ought to open up choice and optionality for veterans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump has not spoken specifically on VA privatization in recent campaign appearances, but has spoken about expanding veterans access to care options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democratic opponents in recent weeks have attacked plans in the conservative Project 2025 blueprint calling for \u201ccost savings\u201d in VA disability payments, to include \u201crevising disability rating awards for future claimants.\u201d Trump has denied any authorship or connection to the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., a veteran and a Harris-Walz campaign co-chair, blasted Vance\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen JD Vance floats the Trump-Vance Project 2025 agenda to privatize the VA, we should take him seriously,\u201d she said. \u201cVeterans deserve better than candidates who will turn their health care into a business opportunity the minute they get the chance. The VA isn\u2019t just another government agency \u2013 it\u2019s a lifeline for veterans, families, and caregivers who\u2019ve sacrificed for our
