{"id":130510,"date":"2026-03-18T18:19:59","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T18:19:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2026\/03\/18\/us-assesses-china-not-planning-to-invade-taiwan-in-2027\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T17:06:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T17:06:02","slug":"us-assesses-china-not-planning-to-invade-taiwan-in-2027","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2026\/03\/18\/us-assesses-china-not-planning-to-invade-taiwan-in-2027\/","title":{"rendered":"US assesses China not planning to invade Taiwan in 2027"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON, March 18 (Reuters) \u2014 China does not currently plan to invade Taiwan in 2027 and seeks to control the island without the use of force, the U.S. intelligence community said on Wednesday, striking a measured tone on one of the world\u2019s biggest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/12\/24\/chinas-military-buildup-makes-us-increasingly-vulnerable-dod-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/12\/24\/chinas-military-buildup-makes-us-increasingly-vulnerable-dod-says\/\">potential flashpoints<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The assessment in the intelligence agencies\u2019 annual report on global threats comes as Beijing has stepped up pressure on Taiwan with frequent military drills, even as U.S. President Donald Trump has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2026\/01\/26\/trumps-new-national-defense-strategy-downgrades-china-threat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2026\/01\/26\/trumps-new-national-defense-strategy-downgrades-china-threat\/\">played down the risk<\/a> of Chinese military action while he is in office. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon late last year said the U.S. military believed China was preparing to be able to win a fight for Taiwan by 2027, the centenary of the founding of its People\u2019s Liberation Army, and was refining options to take Taiwan by \u201cbrute force\u201d if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cChina, despite its threat to use force to compel unification if necessary and to counter what it sees as a U.S. attempt to use Taiwan to undermine China\u2019s rise, prefers to achieve unification without the use of force, if possible,\u201d the U.S. intelligence agencies said in the report. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. \u201cassesses that Chinese leaders do not currently plan to execute an invasion of Taiwan in 2027, nor do they have a fixed timeline for achieving unification,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It reiterated previous views that the PLA was making \u201csteady but uneven\u201d progress on capabilities it could use to capture the democratically governed island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China\u2019s embassy in Washington did not respond immediately to a request for comment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taiwan\u2019s de facto embassy in Washington also did not respond immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump, who has repeatedly touted his \u201cgreat relationship\u201d with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, has downplayed the threat of the Chinese drills around Taiwan and said Xi told him he will not attack Taiwan while the U.S. president is in office \u2014 something Beijing has never confirmed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China views Taiwan as its own territory and has never renounced the use of force to take the island under its control. Taiwan rejects Beijing\u2019s sovereignty claims, saying only the island\u2019s people can decide their future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pressure on Japan to intensify<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite concerns in the U.S. and abroad about Trump\u2019s inclination to back Taiwan, his administration in December unveiled a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2025\/12\/18\/us-preps-massive-weapons-package-for-taiwan-valued-at-over-10-billion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2025\/12\/18\/us-preps-massive-weapons-package-for-taiwan-valued-at-over-10-billion\/\">record $11 billion sale of weapons<\/a> for the island, angering Beijing, which says such arms deals must end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nonetheless, some Japanese officials have worried Trump may be prepared to soften support for Taiwan in pursuit of a trade accord with China, a move they fear will embolden Beijing and spark conflict in an increasingly militarized East Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tokyo had been unnerved by muted U.S. rhetorical support for Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi after her remarks last year that a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan could bring about a Japanese military response. Trump reportedly told her privately not to escalate the ensuing diplomatic row with Beijing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Wednesday\u2019s report, the U.S. intelligence agencies called Takaichi\u2019s remarks on Taiwan a \u201csignificant shift\u201d for a Japanese leader, a framing that is likely to irk Tokyo just a day ahead of a delicate visit by her to the White House. Takaichi has maintained her stance was consistent with Japan\u2019s longstanding policy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cChina is employing multidomain coercive pressure that probably will intensify through 2026, aimed both at punishing Japan and deterring other countries from making similar statements about their potential involvement in a Taiwan crisis,\u201d the report
