Alvin Holsey will step down as head of U.S. Southern Command, a position he\u2019d held for less than a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOn behalf of the Department of War, we extend our deepest gratitude to Admiral Alvin Holsey for his more than 37 years of distinguished service to our nation as he plans to retire at year\u2019s end,\u201d Hegseth wrote in a post on X, referring to the Defense Department as the Department of War after President Donald Trump signed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.war.gov\/News\/News-Stories\/Article\/article\/4295826\/trump-renames-dod-to-department-of-war\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.war.gov\/News\/News-Stories\/Article\/article\/4295826\/trump-renames-dod-to-department-of-war\/\">executive order<\/a> allowing DOD personnel to use the name as a secondary title for the agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hegseth did not expound on the reasons for Holsey\u2019s departure. The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/16\/us\/politics\/southern-command-head-stepping-down.html?partner=slack&amp;smid=sl-share\" rel=\"\">reported<\/a> Thursday that Holsey had voiced concerns about the U.S. military\u2019s mission in Central and South America and the recent strikes on alleged drug boats off the Venezuelan coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump recently <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-cia-covert-operations-venezuela-ecb477ac7f07d5beaf48d44dee75c5e5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-cia-covert-operations-venezuela-ecb477ac7f07d5beaf48d44dee75c5e5\">granted permission<\/a> to the Central Intelligence Agency to conduct covert operations inside Venezuela and confirmed he is considering land operations in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement of Holsey\u2019s departure came two days after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/10\/14\/us-strikes-another-alleged-drug-carrying-boat-off-venezuela-coast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/10\/14\/us-strikes-another-alleged-drug-carrying-boat-off-venezuela-coast\/\">another military strike<\/a> on an alleged drug-carrying boat near Venezuela. It marked the fifth fatal strike since early September on what the Trump administration has identified as drug-carrying vessels in the region, bringing the total death toll to 27 people. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2025\/09\/02\/us-strikes-drug-carrying-vessel-that-departed-venezuela-trump-says\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-2231518590.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US strikes drug-carrying vessel that departed Venezuela, Trump says<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0said Tuesday that the U.S. has carried out a strike in the southern Caribbean against a drug-carrying vessel. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump began ramping up counter-narcotics efforts on his first day in office when he issued an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/designating-cartels-and-other-organizations-as-foreign-terrorist-organizations-and-specially-designated-global-terrorists\/\" rel=\"\">executive order<\/a> designating cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, thus giving the military the green light to target and destroy those that fell under the umbrella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of September, there were eight vessels <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2025\/09\/23\/uss-stockdale-arrives-in-caribbean-to-support-counter-narcotics-effort\/\" rel=\"\">assigned<\/a> to the Southern Command area of operations in support of counter-narcotics efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a military gathering at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, on Sept. 30, Trump provided further justification for the strikes when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2025\/09\/30\/every-venezuelan-drug-boat-leads-to-25000-deaths-trump-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2025\/09\/30\/every-venezuelan-drug-boat-leads-to-25000-deaths-trump-claims\/\">he claimed<\/a> that every targeted drug boat \u201ckills about 25,000 people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before his time as commander of U.S. Southern Command, Holsey deployed at sea with the USS Jesse L. Brown, USS Nicholson, USS Vreeland, USS Vella Gulf, USS Gettysburg and USS Simpson, according to his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southcom.mil\/About\/Leadership\/Bio-Article-View\/Article\/3959139\/adm-alvin-holsey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.southcom.mil\/About\/Leadership\/Bio-Article-View\/Article\/3959139\/adm-alvin-holsey\/\">Navy biography<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He began serving as director of Task Force One Navy in 2020, and from 2021 to 2022, he served as deputy chief of naval personnel and commander of Navy Personnel Command.
