Daryl Caudle, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/08\/01\/senate-confims-new-top-navy-leader-vice-chief-for-space-force\/\" rel=\"\">confirmed<\/a> as the new CNO on Aug. 1, signed the document, which was addressed to Chief of Naval Personnel Vice Adm. Jeffrey Czerewko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen reports of Service members\u2019 unprofessional personal social media use are received at the Echelon 1 level, those reports will be forwarded to you for routing and tracking,\u201d Caudle said in the memo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/navy\/comments\/1nkmxo5\/reporting_unprofessional_social_media_cno_signed\/#lightbox\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/navy\/comments\/1nkmxo5\/reporting_unprofessional_social_media_cno_signed\/#lightbox\">In the memo<\/a>, the CNO instructs Czerewko to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">a. Identify the Service member\u2019s chain of command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">b. Forward the report to the Echelon II and Echelon III commander to delegate for review, inquiry and any action as appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">c. Direct the cognizant Echelon II and Echelon III commander to provide you with timely status reports. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">d. Provide me [Caudle] with routine status updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Caudle specifically states that the chief of naval personnel is not tasked with carrying out any inquiries, investigations or other actions meant to bring about accountability unless those actions are related to unprofessional social media use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chief of naval operations spokesperson was unable to offer further comment on the memo.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/02\/27\/pentagon-orders-new-social-media-purge-to-remove-diversity-mentions\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Trump_67933.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Pentagon orders new social media purge to remove diversity mentions<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">If the services can&#039;t remove DEI content from their platforms by March 5, they must temporarily remove all content published in the Biden administration.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on Sept. 10, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SeanParnellASW\/status\/1966255540012724522\" rel=\"\">announced<\/a> that the Defense Department was keeping a close eye on any service member who celebrated or mocked the \u201cassassination of a fellow American.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reposted Parnell\u2019s post in support, saying such actions were \u201ccompletely unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several service members have been penalized for their social media use in relation to Kirk\u2019s death, including a Marine officer who was pulled from recruiting duties and five Army officers who were suspended while their social media posts are under review, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/pentagon-reviewing-service-members-social-media-posts-on-charlie-kirk\/\" rel=\"\">according<\/a> to reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy Secretary John Phelan <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SECNAV\/status\/1966330151127351715\" rel=\"\">posted<\/a> to X a day after Kirk\u2019s murder reiterating Hegseth and Parnell\u2019s sentiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am aware of posts displaying contempt toward a fellow American who was assassinated,\u201d the post read. \u201cI want to be very clear: any uniformed or civilian employee of the Department of the Navy who acts in a manner that brings discredit upon the Department, the @USNavy or the @USMC will be dealt with swiftly and decisively.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The social media purge was not confined to posts related to Charlie Kirk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/09\/16\/navy-doctor-fired-after-hegseth-libs-of-tiktok-criticize-her-on-x\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/09\/16\/navy-doctor-fired-after-hegseth-libs-of-tiktok-criticize-her-on-x\/\">Hegesth announced the firing of a Navy doctor<\/a>, Janelle Marra, on Sept. 4 on X after posting a social media link from conservative account LibsofTikTok that took umbrage with a transgender healthcare position listed on the service member\u2019s LinkedIn profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hegseth stated that the doctor had been fired, even though it appears the Marra never held the position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March, the U.S. Navy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2025\/03\/24\/us-navy-reiterates-social-media-limits-for-sailors-and-marines\/\" rel=\"\">released<\/a> an administrative order reminding sailors to exercise restraint when engaging in partisan political activity, especially in ways that might imply official sponsorship by the service or Defense Department.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CNO Adm.
