Does it want to remain a critical partner in the most successful military alliance in history or does it want to risk the security of that partnership\u201d through Russian technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00c7avu\u015fo\u011flu said Turkey has also proposed a technical working group inside NATO to figure out how to keep the S-400 firewalled off from other systems, saying \u201cit doesn\u2019t have to be integrated to a NATO system, and that is not our aim. This is for our own use.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is an urgent need of Turkey. We need air defense systems urgently\u2026 because of the traffic in the neighborhood. Everybody has missiles in the neighboring countries, in Syria, in others. NATO is not capable enough to cover our airspace yet,\u201d the minister added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. is hoping to entice Turkey to drop the S-400 in favor of the Patriot missile system, with Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan telling reporters yesterday that \u201cI am very confident in the Patriot proposal that we\u2019ve delivered to Turkey, its availability, its pricing, and very importantly, the industrial participation that comes along with the Patriot system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/smr\/space-missile-defense\/2018\/07\/30\/shaking-hands-with-the-russians-erdogan-sole-decision-maker-on-s-400-deal\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"166\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/erdogan-turkey-president.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">\u2018Shaking hands with the Russians\u2019: Erdogan sole decision-maker on S-400 deal<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Turkey\u2019s top defense procurement office confirmed in late December that Ankara and Moscow had finalized a contract for the acquisition and deployment of the Russian S-400 long-range air and anti-missile defense system on Turkish soil.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But while the U.S. has put forth a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2018\/12\/19\/turkey-cleared-by-us-for-35-billion-patriot-missile-deal-despite-s-400-row\/\" target=_blank>potential offer of the Patriot<\/a>, \u00c7avu\u015fo\u011flu said that proposal \u201cdoesn\u2019t guarantee the United State will be able to sell Patriot to Turkey.\u201d (The minister is correct; the Patriot offer is just a way forward, and could in the future be blocked by Congress should the legislative body decide to do so.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201ccontradictory\u201d statements from the U.S. are not limited to the S-400, \u00c7avu\u015fo\u011flu later noted, with Syria serving as the most obvious example. He cited how the Pentagon, State Department, U.S. Central Command and the White House have all issued different takes on the long-term future of America in that country, and its purpose for being in Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked directly if he knew what U.S. foreign policy in Syria is, \u00c7avu\u015fo\u011flu replied, \u201cNo. And this is the
