{"id":27404,"date":"2018-02-17T18:11:52","date_gmt":"2018-02-17T18:11:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/02\/17\/8-tips-for-women-entrepreneurs\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T05:11:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T05:11:15","slug":"8-tips-for-women-entrepreneurs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2018\/02\/17\/8-tips-for-women-entrepreneurs\/","title":{"rendered":"8 tips for women entrepreneurs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re a woman veteran thinking about starting a business, you\u2019re not alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Federal statistics show the number of women veterans who own businesses has grown by 300 percent in the last decade, making this one of the fastest-growing demographic groups in the entrepreneurship space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in business, as in the military, women can face unique challenges \u2013 a fact not lost on the attendees of a recent gathering of women entrepreneurs in Washington, D.C. At the event, an initiative of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University and Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship, expert entrepreneurs and business leaders offered their tips for breaking into the business world and sustaining a successful venture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>1. Have a plan.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you set up shop, it\u2019s important to have a plan. And not just a plan that passes the test with your family and friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo your market research,\u201d said Allie Coetzee Leslie, a Navy veteran who recently became the deputy administrator of the Small Business Administration. \u201cFind out if what you want to sell is something that the public wants to buy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can do this by testing the product on a small scale first, advised Jamila Payne, founder and CEO of Daily Success Routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To pick a name, gather a focus group of your ideal audience, she said. If you\u2019re worried about money for a brick-and-mortar location, try selling through an online shop first. If it\u2019s a food business you\u2019re after, try out your recipes through a local restaurant or catering gig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou have to just try things \u2014 even when you\u2019re afraid,\u201d Payne said. \u201cYou have to be willing to push ahead and have that tenacity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>2. Know why you\u2019re doing it.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If business ownership becomes more like a job instead of a passion, then you\u2019re doing something wrong, said Mike Haynie, IVMF executive director and founder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTake a little time and think about why you\u2019re doing this,\u201d he said. \u201cYou are more likely to be successful if you build a business that is created around something that\u2019s meaningful to you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He told a tale of two local businesses with what he described as hippie-like cultures, where, in at least one case, employees practiced yoga together and conducted business meetings in a circle on the floor. Both were offered buyouts by much larger national companies. One decided not to sell and remained successful; the other accepted the offer and went bankrupt in six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lesson wasn\u2019t that you shouldn\u2019t consider such an offer, but that you should let change happen in a way that\u2019s consistent with your values, Haynie said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are more likely to be successful if you build a business that is created around something that\u2019s meaningful to you,\u201d he said. \u201cYou are more likely to not find success if you allow folks to seduce you away from that meaning and erode it away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Megan Ogilvie, CEO of Dog Tag Inc., which runs the Dog Tag Bakery in D.C., said people often ask her why she doesn\u2019t try to grow the business by adding more locations or selling their products in name brand grocery stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When questions like this and opportunities arise, go back to your mission, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDoes this serve your mission, and does this serve the population that you want to support?\u201d she told entrepreneurs to ask themselves. \u201cIf at the end of the day, you\u2019re making it work, realize you\u2019re making it work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1363\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/VWISE2.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/VWISE2.jpg.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/VWISE2.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/VWISE2.jpg.jpg?resize=768,511 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/VWISE2.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,682 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/VWISE2.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1022 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Erica McMannes shares tips for finding a work-life balance as a military spouse and entrepreneur during a conference for women entrepreneurs in Washington, D.C. Find a balance that\u2019s right for you.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Erica McMannes, co-founder and CEO of the virtual staffing company HireMadSkills Inc., calls herself a \u201crecovering perfectionist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With her husband on active duty, McMannes knew that starting a business would change the family dynamic and her roles as a wife and mother. But she realized she could be successful in all three areas as long as she stayed focus on the task in front of her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key components to her success have been constant communication with her spouse and learning to say \u201cno,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what works for McMannes might not work for someone else. IVMF Chief Operating Officer Maureen Casey said in an interview that she\u2019s seen people put too much pressure on themselves trying to find a magic recipe for work-life balance that doesn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhether you\u2019re a transitioning service member (or) a spouse \u2013 and you have a family and other obligations \u2013 there is no right or wrong answer to what is the right balance,\u201d she said. \u201cYou shouldn\u2019t let yourself be judged by others. You should just do what\u2019s right for you and those that are in your immediate network.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides, what works now may not in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is so individual for each family,\u201d McManness said. \u201cAnd guess what? As a (military) spouse, what\u2019s normal for two years or six months is going to change in another six months or two years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>4. Practice confidence.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWomen are judged faster by their handshake than men are,\u201d said Dianna Flett, a retired Army lieutenant colonel and founder of Girl Smarts, which facilitates workshops in confidence building for young girls. \u201cIt makes that first impression which only takes three seconds when you\u2019re introducing yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To boost your confidence, Flett recommends taking public speaking classes and practicing eye contact. If you\u2019re naturally an introvert, you will have to adopt some extroverted traits, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s also something to the old adage, \u201cFake it \u2018til you make it,\u201d she reminded the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building confidence starts with keeping commitments to yourself, said Payne \u2014 even simple ones like getting up when your alarm goes off or going to the gym.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She has surveyed more than 1,000 women entrepreneurs, and more than 98 percent agree that they\u2019re good at keeping commitments with others, but not with themselves, she said, which affects personal confidence and time spent developing the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>5. In business, as in life, choose your partner wisely.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCofounders are definitely like a marriage,\u201d said McMannes, who co-founded HireMadSkills with a fellow military spouse and former neighbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McMannes said it\u2019s important to find a person who complements your strengths and weaknesses and is someone with whom you can be completely comfortable and honest \u2014 just like in marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the decision isn\u2019t just an emotional one, Flett reminded the group. You need to have a contingency plan for everything for both the business\u2019 success and potential failure in a legally binding partnership agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you might do with a prenup, put everything on paper and get a lawyer involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>6. Have multiple mentors.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beverly Grandison, a retired Army captain and founder and CEO of Premier Health and Wellness Consulting, has a mentor for her finances, another for business development and another for her personal character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDon\u2019t think that you have to commit to one mentor that\u2019s going to find all of the solutions for all the problems you\u2019ve been having,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s even OK to outgrow them, or for them to outgrow you. Take advantage of available resources.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you have a goal, go for it and do it smart,\u201d Leslie, of SBA, said. \u201cTake advantage of the resources around you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many women don\u2019t know there are resources out there specific to women entrepreneurs \u2014 everything from events to small business loans through SBA, Leslie said in an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SBA also operates a network of Women\u2019s Business Centers, which offer training, counseling and other resources for women entrepreneurs. Of the more than 100 centers around the country, 20 specifically target women veterans, according to SBA\u2019s website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Misty Stutsman, director of the Center of Excellence for Veteran Entrepreneurship at IVMF, said as the number of women in business grows, so does the number of resources to help them. But taking advantage of what\u2019s out there can sometimes get lost in the balancing act between running a business and taking care of a family, as McManness discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe talk about all these resources, but if you don\u2019t put time away for yourself to make use of these resources, then they\u2019re not there, really,\u201d Stutsman said. \u201cEntrepreneurship is not selfish; it\u2019s a way forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>8. Just go for it.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women especially feel like they have to learn more or be better, Payne said. But if you have a good plan, it\u2019s time to get out of your head and go for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are enough as you are right now. You have to trust yourself,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leslie echoed the sentiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you have a goal, go for it, and do it smart. Take advantage of the resources around you,\u201d she said. \u201cI think it\u2019s a great time to be a woman in business.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Essential tips
