Col. Kathy LaSauce got \u201chooked on airplanes\u201d when she became one of the Air Force\u2019s first female officers in aircraft maintenance \u2014 a field previously barred to women in the service \u2014 after joining the service in 1972.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow many young people get to start a life where they are trained about airplanes?\u201d LaSauce told Air Force Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was just the beginning for LaSauce\u2019s aviation career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LaSauce, originally from New York, also became one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/05\/22\/in-bid-for-more-female-pilots-air-force-removes-height-requirement\/\" target=_blank>first female pilots<\/a> in the Air Force after the service unveiled a test program in 1975 that allowed her to complete undergraduate pilot training at Williams Air Force Base in Arizona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She credited her good reputation and maintenance background for why she was tapped for the selective program. That experience also provided a solid foundation as she launched into her aviation career, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe fact that I had the aircraft maintenance, and the technical training, really came in handy as a pilot,\u201d LaSauce said. \u201cIt made me a better pilot, it made me a better commander to understand how airplanes work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LaSauce wasn\u2019t the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/09\/26\/air-force-makes-it-easier-for-pregnant-aviators-to-fly-without-a-waiver\/\" target=_blank>only woman<\/a> who graduated from UPT that year. Nine other women were also in her class: Kathleen Cosand, Victoria Crawford, Mary Donahue, Connie Engel, Mary Livingston, Susan Rogers, Carol Scherer, Christine Schott and Sandra Scott.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, there are more than 800 female pilots and nearly 350 female navigators in the service, according to the Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/06\/11\/this-air-force-pilot-is-the-first-woman-to-fly-the-f-35-in-combat\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/EmilyThompson.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">This Air Force pilot is the first woman to fly the F-35 in combat<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">&quot;Just to be the person who gets that honor, that first, it just meant a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To recognize these pioneers\u2019 accomplishments, the Air Force Education and Training Command renamed the Martin Hall Conference Room to the Trailblazer Room at the AETC headquarters at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph in Texas last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe women of Class \u201977-\u201908 truly broke barriers,\u201d Lt. Gen. Brad Webb, AETC commander, said during a virtual ceremony on June 29, according to an Air Force news release. \u201cThey lived the fact that glass ceilings were a reality simply because they were women. These trailblazers paved the way for future generations of female pilots and their influence on our Air Force is still felt today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is no denying the trailblazing women of Class \u201977-\u201908 were set up in such a way that failure would have been easy,\u201d Webb said. \u201cBut that\u2019s not what airmen do. Through grit and determination, not only did they succeed, they excelled.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to becoming the first women to complete UPT, they also continued to accomplish significant milestones for women during their Air Force careers. For example, Donahue was the first female instructor pilot at the Air Force Academy, Schott was the first woman to become an aircraft commander on the C-9A Nightingale aeromedical evacuation aircraft, and LaSauce was the first female pilot for the C-141 Starlifter aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe fact that they named that room after us trailblazers \u2014 they couldn\u2019t have named it any better, because there are a lot of folks that know nothing about us,\u201d LaSauce said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although LaSauce knew at the time they were part of a test program and understood what was at stake for the future of women in the Air Force, she said she has since come to further recognize the gravity of completing UTP and the lasting impact it would have on women in the service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven now, it took a while for me to realize how significant this really was,\u201d LaSauce said. \u201cI knew we needed to do well. I knew we needed to do well for the women that would follow after us and that they didn\u2019t want to live down a bad reputation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As \u201cexciting\u201d as UPT was, LaSauce said she enjoyed the rest of her career much more. Some of her career highlights also included becoming the first female presidential support pilot with the 89th Airlift Wing, and becoming the first woman to command an aerial port squadron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Air Force afforded me a wonderful career,\u201d said LaSauce, who retired from the service in 1992.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey trained me, they let me use my mind, they let me use my management skills, they gave me an opportunity to show what women could be capable of, and they allowed me to serve my country to the best of my ability,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat more could you ask for?\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cHow many young people get to start
