Nicholas Plante, a spokesman for Train, Advise and Assist Command-Air, said in a statement to Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this exercise, the pilots shot off GBU-58s, which are 250-pound laser-guided bombs. The weapons hit all targets, according to a Twitter post by Resolute Support on Jan. 4. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><font>\u201cThe exercise included two Afghan Air Force A-29s with an Afghan pilot in the rear seat of each aircraft responsible for operating the Forward Looking Infrared system and the laser designator,\u201d Plante said. <\/font><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><font>Although a coalition adviser was piloting each aircraft during this training flight, the planes will have all-Afghan crews when combat missions occur in the future, Plante said. <\/font><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><font>He added that Afghan pilots have proven to be<\/font> \u201cproficient in executing attacks and do so independently on a routine basis,\u201d and \u201call Afghan combat sorties are conducted independent of TAAC-Air advisers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/2018\/01\/14\/dod-ig-afghan-attack-pilots-are-helping-turn-the-tide-for-troops-on-the-ground\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3809418.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">DoD IG: Afghan attack pilots are helping turn the tide for troops on the ground<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Less than two years after flying its first combat mission, the Afghan Air Force\u2019s A-29 Super Tucano aircraft are playing a key role in supporting Afghan soldiers on the ground.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the Afghan pilots carried out this mission, advisers \u201cconducted many training flights simulating weapons employment to reinforce the tactics and procedures prior to using live weapons,\u201d Plante said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s important to note, however, that the targets for this exercise were pre-planned, and \u201caccurate coordinates were known before takeoff,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afghan Tactical Air Coordinators, capable of coordinating close air support from forward locations, were not involved in this training iteration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, Plante said the Afghan Air Force is still not capable of using Joint Direct Attack Munitions, or JDAMs, which autonomously guide a bomb via GPS to a target\u2019s coordinates. Instead, the bombs had to be guided by a laser \u201cspot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spot gives terminal guidance to a bomb, and can be provided by the aircraft that deploys the munition, or another aircraft altogether in what\u2019s called a buddy-lase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Afghan Air Force\u2019s A-29 has a mountable targeting pod under the plane\u2019s engine that can provide laser guidance through both a self-lase and a buddy-lase, according to Plante. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this training event, the Afghan pilots managed to use a buddy-lase from their wingman aircraft. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although further employment of these weapons by Afghan pilots will be based on tactics unique to the combat situation on the ground, the ability to use precision guided munitions would be a critical tool for the NATO-backed Afghan government, according to TAAC-Air. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/2018\/01\/11\/afghan-air-force-must-start-maintaining-its-own-aircraft-report-says\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Afghan_AF_Maintainer.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Afghan Air Force must start maintaining its own aircraft, report says<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Afghan Air Force must start maintaining its own aircraft and stop relying on contractors hired by coalition forces, according to a report by the Defense Department Inspector General.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The development demonstrates an increased independence within the Afghan Air Force, Plante said. The A-29 pilots now offer Afghan National Security Forces support in areas where fighters on the ground were previously dependent on coalition aircraft for close air support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The A-29, designed to be highly maneuverable and capable of flying at low altitudes, is a key platform in coalition advisers\u2019 attempts to develop an organic close air support capability for Afghan forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft began combat operations in Afghanistan in April 2016, and comes with .50-caliber machine guns, 2.75 inch Rockets, and 250 or 500-pound general purpose or precision-guided bombs, according to the Department of Defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Resolute Support held up this latest deployment of guided weapons as an \u201cachievement\u201d that demonstrates the \u201cmotivation and dedication\u201d of Afghan airmen, as well as their \u201ccapacity to learn and integrate new
