{"id":28478,"date":"2018-07-17T15:53:03","date_gmt":"2018-07-17T15:53:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/07\/17\/this-is-what-it-looks-like-when-a-mk-48-torpedo-breaks-your-keel-video\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:30:37","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:30:37","slug":"this-is-what-it-looks-like-when-a-mk-48-torpedo-breaks-your-keel-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2018\/07\/17\/this-is-what-it-looks-like-when-a-mk-48-torpedo-breaks-your-keel-video\/","title":{"rendered":"This is what it looks like when a MK-48 torpedo breaks your keel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Torpedos are every surface sailor\u2019s worst nightmare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The damage inflicted on a surface combatant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2018\/06\/13\/us-navy-pushing-ahead-with-bid-to-extend-the-range-of-its-sub-killer-torpedo\/\" target=\"_blank\">by a modern torpedo<\/a> on a hull is so severe that it presents an existential threat to even the U.S. Navy\u2019s famously tough ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That point was hammered home during last week\u2019s sinking exercise (or SINKEX) inflicted on the former landing ship tank Racine, conducted as part of the biennial Rim of the Pacific exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the video below, watch as the fast-attack submarine Olympia finishes Racine off with an MK-48 Advanced Capability torpedo. Rest in peace, USS Racine.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=a98aa020-30ef-4060-9365-a5eb2d7fae78\" poster=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/video-poster-a98aa020-30ef-4060-9365-a5eb2d7fae78.png\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">That&#8217;s going to leave a mark.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Office of Naval Research is working with Aerojet Rocketdyne to try and extend the range of the MK-48 by increasing the efficiency of the engine propelling the weapon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea behind extending the range of the torpedo is to keep valuable submarines away from potential targets and allow a third party (a P-8 Poseidon overhead, for example) to relay the targeting data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThrough third-party targeting, you can use it as a standoff weapon,\u201d analyst Bryan Clark, with the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, said in a recent interview. \u201cIf you can extend that range to 50 or more miles, you can attack submarines without your sub having to hold that target organically with its sensors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At those ranges, it\u2019s unlikely the submarine would give away its position by firing a torpedo, he said.
