{"id":32347,"date":"2017-08-11T19:46:19","date_gmt":"2017-08-11T19:46:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2017\/08\/11\/mobility-guardian-exercise-focuses-on-real-world-training-for-junior-crews\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:22:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:22:47","slug":"mobility-guardian-exercise-focuses-on-real-world-training-for-junior-crews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2017\/08\/11\/mobility-guardian-exercise-focuses-on-real-world-training-for-junior-crews\/","title":{"rendered":"Mobility Guardian exercise focuses on real-world training for junior crews"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Washington \u2014 During its new Mobility Guardian exercise here, Air Mobility Command turned its focus to growing junior aircrews by putting them through tough, realistic training and giving them the opportunity to work alongside other units and militaries \u2014 just as they would on the battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mobility Guardian, which kicked off the first week of August, replaces the command\u2019s Rodeo competitions, which pitted top airmen against each other \u2014 and international participants \u2014in a friendly competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The last one was in 2011, and since then the Rodeo has been discontinued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reason for the shift ties back to the role AMC and its aircraft and crews play in the fight overseas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the past, Air Mobility Command served in a supporting role in both training exercises and deployments by carrying ground personnel and refueling combat aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the changing global landscape, however, airlift has emerged as a core ability in various missions, and the command wants to hone those skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 3,000 service members, 40 aircraft and 20 international partners joined the two-week exercise that included a wide variety of war requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first week focused on joint forcible entry, airfield seizure, assault zone landings, night-vision operations and airdrops. Those operations allowed troops to transition to the focus of the second week: sustainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2017\/07\/28\/3000-troops-40-plus-aircraft-to-train-in-new-air-mobility-command-exercise\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/635815415638218043-ops-tempojpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">3,000 troops, 40-plus aircraft to train in new Air Mobility Command exercise<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The inaugural Mobility Guardian exercise will focus on training junior crew members.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The participating aircraft include C-130s, C-17s, C-5s, KC-10s and KC-135s, as well as F-15s and A-10s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Aug. 2, more than 300 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, jumped from more than 10 C-130s to seize an airfield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From there, contingency response groups opened an air base with equipment airdrops to support the humanitarian training efforts on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brig. Gen. Reid Jr.\/Air Force)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>GAINING EXPERIENCE<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Mobility Guardian, the focus was on training junior crews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re going to send instructors with their crews because the scenarios are complex and you need someone who\u2019s experienced, but they can also send a more junior first pilot or a more junior co-pilot,\u201d Robinson said. \u201cSome haven\u2019t even deployed yet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Airman 1st Class David John-Lay, a KC-135 maintainer who\u2019s been in the Air Force for a little more than one year, said he didn\u2019t expect to be picked to participate in the exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is something that is very high-paced, and I thought they would pick more experienced people,\u201d said John-Lay, who\u2019s assigned to the 100th Maintenance Squadron at Royal Air Force Mildenhall in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John-Lay, who said his unit thought it would be good for him to experience an exercise of this magnitude, said he\u2019s there to learn as much as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s definitely good to be in this environment,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen it\u2019s a real-life situation, I can approach it better. I\u2019m definitely looking forward to having an edge on people who don\u2019t experience this high-tempo type of maintenance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lt. Col. Jael Laborn\/Air Force)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>THE FUTURE<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Mobility Guardian ended Aug. 11, Air Mobility Command took the feedback and lessons learned to see what can be tweaked for next time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robinson said there will be a debrief in mid-September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the command decides to hold Mobility Guardian every year, he said, there would need to be a dedicated squadron to focus its time to planning the exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having it every other year would provide the time to build it correctly and give other units and nations the time to participate, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOperational success requires mobility airmen to work together as part of a joint and international team,\u201d Gen. Carlton Everhart, AMC\u2018s commander, said. \u201cGlobal reach is not a birthright for America. It requires hard work, preparation, investment and training. Mobility Guardian provides the needed training platform to test skills, build the confidence and ensure readiness to succeed in any
