{"id":32566,"date":"2021-12-29T20:23:05","date_gmt":"2021-12-29T20:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/12\/29\/air-force-exchanges-will-carry-more-maternity-uniforms-at-a-dozen-bases\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:24:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:24:02","slug":"air-force-exchanges-will-carry-more-maternity-uniforms-at-a-dozen-bases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2021\/12\/29\/air-force-exchanges-will-carry-more-maternity-uniforms-at-a-dozen-bases\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Force exchanges will carry more maternity uniforms at a dozen bases"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pregnant airmen at several Air Force bases will have an easier time finding maternity uniforms that fit thanks to changes spearheaded by Air Combat Command\u2019s women\u2019s policy group earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cSword Athena\u201d policy team pushed the Army and Air Force Exchange Services to expand the availability of operational camouflage pattern and service dress maternity uniforms at stores across the command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lack of sizing options is particularly a problem at smaller, more rural bases that don\u2019t host big clothing sales or sell as many uniforms as their larger counterparts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previously, all but one ACC location offered a single maternity OCP uniform per size for pregnant airmen to try on \u2014 if it was in stock at all. Then customers needed to order their clothes from the AAFES website.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2021\/11\/17\/military-parents-foot-the-bill-to-ship-breast-milk-to-their-infants-thats-about-to-change\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/211026-F-F3340-1002.jfif_.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Military parents foot the bill to ship breast milk to their infants. That could change soon.<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Advocates hope reimbursement policy will change to include breast milk starting in January.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women have resorted to footing the bill to ship various sizes from other bases, sometimes overseas, so they can try them on and return what doesn\u2019t fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUsually there is a network of ladies who find other ways to acquire these items, but it is hit or miss,\u201d Master Sgt. Aubrey Woodworth, assistant superintendent of the 97th Intelligence Squadron at Offutt and a mother of five, said in a release. \u201cIf you\u2019re the first airman in your unit who\u2019s been pregnant in a while, it makes it even more challenging.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other problems arose at exchanges that the Air Force itself doesn\u2019t manage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome locations were joint bases where the exchanges were run by another branch, so their inventory was not populating on Air Force lists,\u201d said Andrew Weaver, vice president for community outreach at AAFES.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, half of the bases run by ACC will keep two sets of maternity OCPs in stock at their stores, the service said. Those include Beale AFB, California; Creech AFB, Nevada; Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona; Moody AFB, Georgia; Offutt AFB, Nebraska; and Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten sets of each size uniform will be stocked at the other six bases: Mountain Home AFB, Idaho; Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota; Nellis AFB, Nevada; Holloman AFB, New Mexico; Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia; and Shaw AFB, South Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2021\/07\/06\/the-air-force-didnt-have-a-manual-for-pregnant-airmen-so-this-mom-made-one\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Thompson.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The Air Force didn\u2019t have a manual for pregnant airmen. So this mom made one.<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Air Force wants to turn Thompson&#039;s guide into an official document.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those installations sold at least 50 maternity uniforms in the past year, the Air Force said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe service dress maternity uniform program was also expanded to all ACC bases, which now have at least one size available for fitting,\u201d the service said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AAFES has added a size chart to its online uniform listings as well, so airmen don\u2019t have to rely on in-person try-ons to figure out what to wear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s the latest shift in a series of updates to better support female airmen in their personal and professional lives, such as redesigning body armor to properly fit women, allowing Bluetooth-enabled breast pumps in secure facilities and changing hair regulations to be more health-conscious. At the time of this writing, the Air Force hasn\u2019t provided any updates on an effort launched in 2020 to develop maternity flight suits for female aviators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pandemic-era supply chain woes are complicating matters, however.
