Mac Thornberry, R-Calif., and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2018\/11\/28\/inhofe-sets-collision-course-with-dems-on-defense-budget-nukes-and-transgender-troops\/\" target=_blank>Sen. Instead, major budget cuts \u201cwould be a dangerous disservice to our troops and the American people they serve and protect. We all know that America can afford survival,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon had been preparing for a $733 billion budget for FY20, until a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2018\/10\/26\/its-official-dod-told-to-take-cut-with-fy20-budget\/\" target=_blank>surprise announcement<\/a> by President Donald Trump cut that to $700 billion. Pentagon planners have been scrambling the last few weeks to find ways to make those numbers work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a Q&amp;A session afterwards, the secretary tried to downplay the potential chaos of such a surprise cut, calling it \u201cthe normal give and take of building the president\u2019s budget,\u201d adding \u201cit should be challenging. We don\u2019t want to spend any money in excess of what is needed on our defense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a the American homeland.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Mattis indicated that he would push for more money behind doors, noting that Inhofe and Thornberry have laid out their view and \u201cI would just tell you that the issue is in play, and I\u2019ll give my advice to the president, I owe him the courtesy of that in private before I speak about it in public.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have go to make certain we can restore America\u2019s strength,\u201d he added. \u201cIt\u2019s up to me to make the logical argument about what the president\u2019s submission should look like to the Office of Management and Budget, to the Congress &#8230; at that point, the Congress will take our input on board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m optimistic at the end of the road we\u2019ll have what we need to keep the country safe,\u201d Mattis
